Let’s Get Padded Up #LGPU: EVERY Girl Needs Pads. Period.
Join the Movement! Save the Girl Child Movement #SGCM #Zimbabwe
Launched in March 2017, the initial target of #LGPU was to provide sanitary wear (disposable pads and mostly reusable pads) to 75 girls in Mbizingwe, Esigodini & 95 girls at Chiedza Child Care Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe. Days for Girls Australia was kind enough to collaborate and sent us a donation for 500 girls! The challenge we have now is paying for the shipping costs to Zimbabwe: $2,800 (£1,700).
Why girls? Why Pads?
Girls hold up “half the sky” as the Chinese proverb goes. They are central to sustainable development, health and social wellbeing. As Africans we say, "If you educate a girl you educate a community". Without access to sanitary pads, the average school-going girl is forced to miss close to 50 days of class every year; that is: 528 days of schooling across the years that a girl should be in school.
Why reusable pads?
Save the Girl-with-a-Vision (SGV) Program offered both disposable and reusable pads to girls in Esigodini in 2015 and the girls showed preference to the reusable pads. We share their opinion as one doesn't have to worry about how to throw them away. Disposable pads add the additional chore of disposal by burning due to the stigma attached to them. Girls are already overburdened by responsibilities in the home. Secondly, if you take good care of them, the reusable pads can last up to 2 years. It also helps that they are better for the environment.
Nolwazi Ncube is the co-founder of SGV and Save the Girl Child Movement (SGCM). SGCM has partnered with the Rotaract Club of Harare West and the Rotaract Club of Borrowdale Brooke for this campaign. Help us with your donations so we can help 500 girls in Zimbabwe!
