Waukesha School District has informed graduating seniors that if their families have not paid their total financial obligations by June 8th, they will not be able to participate in the graduation ceremony. In the past, diplomas were withheld until all fees were paid---but the students were allowed to participate in the ceremony. As you can see by the letter below, that is no longer the case.
While the district will accept payment plans and there are some waivers to apply for, this does not mean that their financial obligation will be reduced to a manageable amount. It also does not ensure that struggling families will be able to pay the entire amount by June 8th. This means that students who have worked hard and earned the privilege of walking across the stage---will not be able to do so.
Many friends and I have been working together to help families in need meet their obligations. We have already helped 3 students, but we want to help more!! One single high school has approximately $40,000 in fees owed by the senior class. While some of this may get paid before June 8th, there are 2 other high schools with seniors who have fees owed as well. There are several dozen students that will be affected. I personally know of families who have taken out a loan or chose not to pay other bills to try and obtain the funds in time. Also, after the age of 18, the bill is issued in the student's name and becomes their own financial obligation!
Your senior year is an exciting time and graduation is no exception!! We want to see every single senior who has earned the honor of graduating participate in the ceremony!! Please join in our efforts and contribute!!! Let's see if we can reach our goal by June 7th, 2018!!!! Imagine all of the worthy seniors donning their cap and gown and their families proudly watching as they cross the stage!
