Lest We Forget our Unknown Man

Donation protected
On the 1st of December in 1948. An "Unknown" man died. He was found dead against the seawall on Somerton Beach, Adelaide the next morning.

This man was a father, and a son. He lived, loved, felt all those things as do WE all. A lack of identification, lack of understanding, and fear of the unknown for some meant there was never official closure memorialising who he was. Grieving, for those who knew, was private but the loss felt no less.

This campaign, independent of any other current public campaign, welcomes the support of all who have interest or care, hoping to raise funds to be used to heighten the profile and continued public engagement of this case. Keeping connection with the current generation is what is vital to keeping alive the continued questioning through which, perhaps and hopefully, answers will appear.

"The Unknown Man", or "Somerton Man" as he has become to many is not the only "unnamed" person who passed from this world in such a way - in South Australia alone there are too many such cases within our gazettes where no identification has been achieved, but whom have not received the homage as has Our Man. This campaign also seeks to symbolically honour those lives and services through this one man, as the Tombs of the Unnamed Soldier do for the lost hundreds of thousands of servicemen worldwide.
