Legal Aid for Violet and Larissa

For those of you who don’t know their story, here’s the condensed version.
Larissa was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after Violet was born. For a short time, we thought it was cured, but it came back with a vengeance three years ago. She has fought the good fight but we’re reaching a point where she is no longer able to care for Violet due to her health struggles. She and Violet’s father made the decision when Violet was young that, due to both of their chronic health conditions, a third party parent needed to be designated so that when times arose where neither of them was able to parent Violet would have a safe, known family to be part of.
Her father spent the majority of last month in and out of the hospital recovering and convalescing from a severe diabetic episode. Her mother is currently in hospice due to complications from her cancer and treatments, and it will be a miracle if she recovers.
My family was allowed the honor and responsibility of being the non-parent custodial home for Violet. She and our daughter are only three months apart in age and have grown up together as best friends. Violet has a room in our house, with her own furniture, clothes, and toys. She knows all of the relatives and has spent time with them as part of our family regularly throughout her life. Violet’s extended family has been consulted and are satisfied with this decision, as it allows her to remain in a home with people she knows, trusts, and loves. It allows her to remain in karate, and to live in a home that is already living a lifestyle geared around six-year-olds.
This Go Fund Me is to help my family and Violet’s family go through the legal system so that I can be recognized as a parent. By obtaining non-parent custody it would allow us to handle any medical needs that Violet may have, and it would allow the school system to treat us as parents. In the event that she loses both parents to their medical issues, it would allow her to remain in our home and not be placed in the foster care system. Helen (Violet’s maternal grandmother) and I are in the process of working with a lawyer to verify all of our paperwork is completed and filed correctly, and many people in and around Larissa’s life have expressed an interest in helping out with the cost.
