Legacy of a Hero is in its editing and post production stages.

In order to make it to our deadline, we're asking for donations for the editing, polishing and promoting of our wonderful film.

A little about the project:

I am Diane Basilone Hawkins, niece of WWII war hero Sgt. John Basilone. Legacy of a Hero is a documentary film I have been working on, memorializing the life of Gunnery Sgt John Basilone and the men who fought by his side.

I have traveled to Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal to retrace the steps of the soldiers , sailors, airmen, coastguardsmen and Marines who fought and risked their lives in WWII for our freedom. Our foundation, The Sgt John Basilone Foundation, raises awareness for veterans suffering from PTSD.

Funds from Legacy of a Hero will help support the foundation and it's cause.
I am hoping that the film - a clip of which can be found at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmyQel4ur1k
will bring more light to Sgt. John Basilone's story and how it can inspire veterans to find a sense of purpose after they have put their lives on the line for their country and inspire others to find purpose when their lives change direction. I believe that memorializing the life of Gunnery Sgt. Basilone may give the same hope and inspiration he gave during his life to the men who fought by his side. By following in John's footsteps, his battle fields - Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal - I have taken a journey of courage, fearlessness, and drive.

A report on the film, my journey through Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal and the concept behind it can be found at:  http://www.news9.com/story/25840862/film-maker-visits-oklahoma-to-keep-legac

One of the most striking parts of my journey through Gunny Basilone's life has been the accounts from those who fought alongside him. His heroic nature was not only on the battlefield but in life - a big brother as well as a Sergeant . Perhaps it is better described by the veterans themselves - Eugene Iconetti's choice words at John's induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXSJmXGKdO4

Sgt. John Basilone remains a hero figure to many, resurrected in Spielberg/Hanks HBO Series - The Pacific  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SQqVEu135E
and it would be a shame not to use his story to reach out to others. I think he would want that.

I hope that this story can be motivational to others.

Great News!!! Max Lewkowicz from Dog Green Productions is collaborating with me to make "Legacy of a Hero" come to its final fruition. He is extremely excited about telling the story of Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone. We are now planning our additional filming which will include the 75th Anniversary of Iwo Jima. I met Max in France while at the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. I was introduced to him through Tim Gray of the WWII Foundation. He had been wanting to do a film about my uncle for a couple of years and we decided that working together would be the perfect solution.

The former secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus was the first to announce to me the naming of the Navy Destroyer in honor of Sgt. John Basilone. I then had this interview at the Pentagon with Captain Patrick McNally. Yesterday I spoke with Alicia Aadneson Ship Introduction Specialist Department of the Navy and we talked about the future dates of the Keel Laying, Christening, and Commissioning. When I receive the official dates we will keep you posted. It is very exciting as this is another addition to the Legacy of a Hero Sgt. John Basilone.

On June 4th 2019, 2 days before the D-Day Commemoration in Normandy I met with Gisele Grosz, President of the Commission of International Affairs Federal Union of Veterans Combattants and her associate Claude Henri. We discussed the problems of returning Veterans both in France and the United States dealing with transitional issues, Post-Traumatic Stress and the Lack of Employment. We were exchanging ideas and this conversation will continue in NYC at the French Consulate on July 3rd 2019. We are working together to find the solution to these issues. We will have updates on this meeting next week.

On June 6, 2019 I had the privilège and honor to attend the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is located at Colle-sur-mer, Normandy France.
It honors American troops who died in Europe. Contains 9, 387 WWII . 1 from WWI.
307 are unknown.

I also was extremely blessed to be able to speak with several Veterans who fought in france and Germany during the European theater in WWII.

Veteran Jack Appel visits every other year and sometimes every year to pay respects to his band of brothers who didn’t make it back home, they all say that they are the real heroes but we know that they all are heros! The Ceremony was extremely touching and both French President Emmanuel Macron and President Trump presented the surviving Veterans who were present the Le Legion d'honneur Medal. The Legion of Honor is the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits established in1802 by Napoleon Bonoparte and retained by all French governments and regimes.

I have never served, but I strongly support our military and our veterans, and as a videographer a project like this is one that I am impressed by and happy to make a donation to. The story of W.W. II Marine hero Sgt. John Basilone is one that should be known by all.
