Our friend Lee Hilty crashed his helicopter and is badly hurt. We are grateful to God that he survived. He will need help with medical bills. Thanks in advance for helping us help Lee.

Lee's story of the crash:
“Hey Everyone! Thank the good Lord that I am alive! A slight mistake on takeoff was all it was.

I was at a friend’s house for supper at his private airstrip. The last thing I remember is playing rook. The friend said that I told him that I was going to hover, turn 180 degrees, then depart down his runway to the south, which would have cleared all trees in the area. This was in the dark of course. Instead, I hovered, turned 160 degrees and departed and hit a tree.

I remember seeing a flash of a pine tree. At this point, I was 50-60’ in the air. Somehow, the helicopter came down. Somehow, the helicopter stayed level. Somehow, I unbuckled my seatbelt. And somehow, I walked away from the helicopter myself.

If any one of these “somehow” things had not happened, I would not be here. I feel so blessed to have so many friends that are more than willing to say a nice word, to offer a prayer, to pay a visit or offer a helping hand. Thank you all very much!”

Hi,
This is Pastor Dane Skelton. I created this GoFundMe account to help my friend and fellow pilot, Lee Hilty. I am the pastor of Faith Community Church in South Boston, Virginia ( www.fccsobo.org) where Lee has been attending for the past year.

Folks have asked for more info about Lee and his accident so here's an update on his medical and financial situation. I'll do a separate update with his story of the crash.

All of the donations will be used to help pay Lee's medical bills.

Lee was Life Flight airlifted to UNC Chapel Hill Medical Center Saturday night around 10:30 PM, April 6 after his helicopter crashed into trees about 50 feet off the ground. He was in the UNC ICU for a day. He has a break in his right heal / ankle area that was surgically reduced yesterday, Monday, April 7. His right upper jaw is broken and will be surgically repaired sometime this week. He has significant lacerations to his face and his right eye may be damaged. His L4 vertebrae is fractured. (He is still at UNC Medical Center). He also had second degree burns to his back and arms and a few third degree burns. He will likely remain in the hospital through the coming weekend.

We expect, based on the injuries and length of hospital stay that Lee's medical bills will be substantial. He is a private contractor that provides hauling services and other kinds of light construction work. He has no medical insurance. He does have some insurance that will cover lost wages for missed work. That's all. My experience with such things tells me that his bills will be more than the $150,000 goal we have set.
