Lauren's Half Marathon

£2,455 of £1,500 goal

Raised by 112 people in 9 months
Hello! I’m Lauren and I hate running.

Foolishly, I’ve signed up to do the Oxford Half Marathon on 7 October 2018 – as a challenge to myself but also to fundraise for Rumbletums Cafe and Training Project, a charity close to my heart and my home, back in Nottingham.

For those that might not know, I have twin sisters (Nicola and Claire) with Down’s syndrome.

For those that do know already, you’ll know how awesome they are!

For the past 4 years, Nicola has been one of the trainees at Rumbletums Cafe and Training Project, which was set up in 2011 to offer vocational training and work experience placements to young people and young adults (16-30) with learning disabilities. Since working at Rumbletums her confidence and conversational skills have blossomed and the project itself is brilliant and is such a fabulous part of the community.

During its first year, and my first year at University, I volunteered at Rumbletums working in the kitchen and front of house and it was a fantastic experience. Its success has grown over the last 7 years and Rumbletums now employs five staff and has space for up to 30 trainees. As well as being a fantastic training project, Rumbletums has become a community hub in Kimberley and also offers a parent and toddler group, a Silver Screen film night for older people, regular social events for young people with disabilities and subsidised room hire space for local voluntary organisations and community groups. For the last 7 years, Rumbletums has rented its premises at a discounted rate, but now the landlords want to sell the building within the next year... at a cost of £200,000. Rumbletums is, therefore, faced with having to buy the premises, move out, or wind up the project.

There are no suitable alternative premises locally and no-one associated with the project, now or in the past, wants it to end. The need for supported training for young people with learning disabilities is as great as it ever was and the local community values the other services that Rumbletums offers.

Rumbletums is going to try to raise £200,000 to buy the building in order to continue - and expand - the project, and for this we need all the help we can get.

I’d love to be able to help this project continue to succeed, allowing a place for my sister and others, to develop their skills and be part of the community. I don’t expect my run to be fast, but I’m going to make it all the way round! If you’d be interested in sponsoring me, please do!

If you’re unable to donate, please do share this!

I’ll try to keep this page updated with my running progress but if you’d like to keep up-to-date about the fundraising for the building itself after my run is over, or to see some wonderful photos of the trainees in action, please visit: https://uk.gofundme.com/rumbletums-cafe

Thank you!

What an adventure this has been! £1970 for Rumbletums (or £150 a mile!) - it's incredible. Thank you all so much for supporting me!

So today was the day! I actually RAN A HALF MARATHON!!!! (My official time was 02:17:16 for anyone that's interested.) I'm over the moon to have completed it but my legs are very tired now so I think I'll be doing lots of sitting down for a little while!

I've included a photo of me and Nicola after the race - sitting down was great until I had to stand up again! Unfortunately due to weather issues earlier last month, the medals didn't arrive on time so it will be arriving in the post!

Thank you all again - you're all amazing!!!

Thank you to everyone that has donated - I've smashed my initial £500 target and I'm so grateful to you all!

Training has been going well and I even kept it up whilst I was away! (Beach runs are my new favourite.)

I've received my race number in the post so it's all become very real with just over a week to go! Eek!

Please do share the link - I'd love to raise the profile of this a little more in the final week before the run!

Thanks again!

How it Works
  1. You are donating to PayPal Giving Fund UK, a registered charity (No. 1110538), which will email you a receipt for your donation and claim Gift Aid where eligible.
  2. GoFundMe’s platform is free. The charity will typically receive the funds from PayPal Giving Fund within 15-45 days of your donation if the charity has enrolled (or 90 days if the charity has not yet enrolled). Unlike other platforms, 100% of any Gift Aid will go to the charity as well.
* In very limited cases, a recommended charity may cease to meet PayPal Giving Fund's legal or other eligibility requirements. In such cases, PayPal Giving Fund will reassign the funds to a similar charity, and (wherever possible) seek a new recommendation from donors.
