Laura's Creek Fire Relief Fund

$23,950 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 273 people in 7 months
Created December 7, 2017
Our friend and colleague, Laura, lost her home in the recent Creek Fire in Los Angeles County. Well-versed in fire safety and having recently updated her home for fire prevention, the Creek Fire moved so rapidly that Laura and her husband evacuated with only the clothes they were wearing and their dog.

Laura and her husband are starting over.  Their home has been declared a complete loss and their possessions are gone.

As many know, Laura loves Hawaii. Let's be her rainbow at this time of grief and loss... any support you could share with her at this time would be greatly appreciated.

Your thoughts, prayers, words of encouragement, and donations will mean the world to Laura and her family.

Mahalo nui loa iā ʻoe

This campaign is being organized by Laura's colleague, Suzanna Olson (Burbank, CA). All donations will go directly to Laura for her immediate needs (shelter, clothing, food) and long-term relief as she faces the challenge of rebuilding. Laura will be the only person with direct access to withdraw the relief gifts.

Happy new year, friends. Stephen and I spent the last sunset of 2017 standing in the ashes. We saged the property in a cleansing ceremony and prayed for a productive 2018. Earlier in the day, we temp-fenced the boundaries of our property to the east and south where the beautiful new fencing built last Spring and deck burned away. Sadly, we had to post a lot of ugly "keep out" signs on all perimeters since we'd been rooted and looted at some point during Christmas week. That beautiful iron headboard that I bought at Lucas Ranch is now on a scrap heap somewhere and a few bucks in someone's pocket. My prayer is the money served to make someone's family holiday better. While it may sound like a sad way to end 2017, really, it's good progress. We are thankful for the new year and continue to walk in spirit knowing the divine is being revealed. May your footsteps find the divinity in all things in the coming year, too. 2018 is our year to reclaim so much, my friends. We will do the work.

Much love,
Laura and Stephen

Hello, friends.

A quick update. We met with the insurance claims adjuster and some county officials yesterday. Building will take approximately 24 months. We are waiting to hear what the insurance company thinks our “replacement” value is – that means what they think it would cost to put up the same walls, doors and windows in the same footprint. According to the County, we need to build a two-car garage to meet current code. The insurance will not pay for the garage since we didn’t have one before (same footprint). So. Boo. Please update your insurance and make sure that your coverage includes extra funding for meeting current building code! We had it, but not enough.

Thanks so much to all of you offering gifts of clothing, toiletries and furniture, but our space is limited to a 10x10 bedroom at the moment. We are hoping to get the Airstream back to a livable state sooner than later. We will most likely be living in it for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, we are staying with Brook and Andy who are graciously putting up with us taking over their kitchen and spare room. Four adults, three dogs and a pig all sharing a house. There’s a screenplay in there somewhere.

I’ve attached a photo of what’s left of our house. You are looking at what used to be the living room and master bedroom. There are also screenshots of a video Andy shot as we drove down the canyon at 4am last Tuesday.

Your contributions are making the difference between what we had and what we now need to build.

Love,
Laura

A message from Laura

Dear friends,

How am I standing when my knees are buckled in the ash? How do I lose everything and yet all my needs are met? How do I explain that where a house once stood, hope now has a home? How can I be so broken, but know I am whole? Your love sustains me.

Words are inadequate to express the gratitude in my heart. You clothed us, fed us and gave us shelter. You’ve called, texted, emailed and covered my cube in post-it notes. You’ve cried with me and prayed for me. The outpouring of contributions to the GoFundMe lifts the burden of the future from my family’s shoulders.

I will not lie. The idea of beginning again in our 60s just about knocked us out. We’ve spent the last few years of our lives carefully planning for retirement. We remodeled our house in anticipation of its eventual sale. My husband lovingly hand-crafted every corner. I’d carefully stored all of my animation swag and art – from the Iron Giant to Up!. The signed posters were impeccably framed and hung. The guitars and drums outlined the music room. We spent 27 years building an artist’s home with a million-dollar view.

We spent a week in spring fireproofing the house-siding and passed fire inspection with flying colors.

“Take my hand
Life is what happens to you
While you’re busy making other plans…”

Today we walk in faith with each one of you by our sides. With your love and support, we can begin again. We see it. We feel it. We know it. We can hardly express the depth of our gratitude to you for the outpouring of love. You came alongside us in one of the most difficult times of our lives and you carry us even now. While my husband and I are a tad less certain about our retirement years, we do know that we have each other, our daughter, our dog, our faith and really good friends.

Thank you with all my heart. Peace and blessings, my compassionate friends.

Love,
Laura
