Laura vs Lymphoma

After 2 months of high fevers and generally feeling unwell, and following a splenectomy (owing to a massively enlarged spleen) and a hysterectomy (owing to a large fibroid tumor), at age 38, Laura was diagnosed with cancer in October 2018.

Her cancer is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Laura has begun the first of what will be several prolonged chemotherapy treatments. Because of this, she will be unable to work and probably will not be able to return to work until at least spring 2019.  She has already been unable to work for a few months due to her illness, and will now have to go through months of chemo. She is having a great deal of anxiety about what her situation will be once she has returned to health. We (her sisters) are trying to help her keep her apartment, keep her car, and keep her bills up to date, in anticipation of the time when she will be able to resume work.

She is someone who has spent most of her adult life volunteering with an organization that feeds the homeless. She selflessly devoted most of her time and energy to Food Not Bombs and has no savings.

Anything you can donate will be truly appreciated.  Everything we can do to help and surround Laura with love is what is most important so she can focus on beating this thing.  Please spread the word. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Love, Mary, Amy, and Christie

So sorry I haven't updated in a while, but largely that's been because there has been no news. Which is a good thing, given the current circumstances. Chemo is still leaving Laura fatigued and nauseated and feeling unwell but the cancer is still being kept at bay for now. Laura had the first round of an additional chemo regimen (methotrexate) last Thursday and tolerated it very well, no new symptoms so far. She's doing great, overall, has gained 10 pounds :) and is getting around much better than she was at first.

Since receiving her first chemo treatment, Laura has had ups and downs. She handled the first chemo round tolerably well, but developed a low-grade fever and abdominal pain and was readmitted to Penn for observation, in case she had an infection. There was no infection but she has developed blood clots in her lungs and is being treated with blood thinners for the time being. Next chemo is on November 15 <3. We thank you all for your love, support, and well-wishes as Laura continues on her journey to win this battle. Which she will. She has to.

Laura has been discharged from the hospital. After only one chemo treatment, she is feeling better. Her daily high fevers have gone and she is getting around better than she has since she first got sick in August. She is having some nausea and some weird chemo-related symptoms but nothing unmanageable. We are all educating ourselves, settling in to our new normal, and mercilessly banishing all germs from Laura's environment :). Next chemo treatment in 21 days. There's still a long road ahead, but Laura is starting strong.

We are all floored by everyone's generosity and kindness during this time. Your love, kind words, supportive comments, and donations to help support Laura have gone a long way toward alleviating her stress and taking some pressure off. We all cannot thank you enough for sharing, donating, and sending your love and well-wishes.

Happy Halloween!

I'll start today's update with the good news: Laura's prognosis has not been changed, only her treatment course. Her doctors still expect her to beat this and achieve a cure. But the PET scan results showed metastasis to the bone marrow and liver. Her cancer is Stage 4. Laura's chemo course will be longer and more aggressive. But she's still got this.

I cannot begin to thank each and every one of you for your support. Laura is blown away by everyone's generosity (as are we) and it's helping her see she is NOT ALONE. Right now, that is helping her most of all. Thank you, thank you, thank you <3
