Launch Pad Astronomy

What is Launch Pad?

Launch Pad  is a workshop for established writers held annually (usually in June or July) in beautiful high altitude Laramie, Wyoming. It aims to provide a “crash course” for the attendees in modern astronomy science through guest lecturers and observation through the University of Wyoming’s professional telescopes. The workshop has been supported in the past by NASA, the National Science Foundation, Uwingu, and SFWA as well as a number of generous individual donors.

Launch Pad was created by science fiction author, astronomer, and University of Wyoming professors Mike Brotherton, Ph.D., and Jim Verley, Ph.D. A third individual, Christian Ready, an astronomer whose work experience includes the Hubble Space Telescope and a popular public speaker has been a regular instructor as well as a very strong supporter of Launch Pad.

Why is this fundraiser needed?

For the first time in over 10 years of workshops, the program has gone over budget. This was primarily due to bait and switch tactics from Advantage Car Rental on the three SUVs that were rented to transport the participants.  The originally reserved vehicles did not accommodate the number of riders advertised, and same-day upgrade prices were excessive.

How can you help?

100% of all donations, no matter how small, will be used to pay the University of Wyoming back for the overage and help restore the program’s budget.
