Launch Oncology on Navajo

Help Bring the First Cancer Treatment Facility to the Navajo Reservation

Did you know that no cancer treatment is available on any Indian reservation?

Nowhere does this create more hardship than on the Navajo Nation, where cancer patients must travel at least 125 miles off the reservation for treatment. Some patients must even travel the same distance as DC to NYC just for one round of chemo!

Cancer is an urgent concern for Navajo, Hopi and San Juan Southern Paiute Tribal Members because the U.S. government abandoned hundreds of uranium mines that continue to contaminate their environment.

A 2015 University of New Mexico study found that 85% of Navajo homes have uranium contamination, and Navajos living near these mines have higher levels of uranium in their bones than 95% of the American population.

Navajo, Hopi and San Juan Southern Paiute Tribal Members should not have to fight cancer without access to local treatment.

With your help, Tuba City Hospital can launch an oncology program on the Navajo Nation. Married oncologists Drs. Frank Dalichow and Johanna DiMento are loading up their doggies and heading from Maryland to Navajo to begin providing cancer care to Navajo, Hopi and Paiute patients this Fall. But we have no clinic yet.

The federal government won’t help us. Will you? Just $50,000 will save lives:

Campaign Rewards:
$5,000 - Curated 3 Day Tour of the Navajo Nation for up to 4 people.
$1,000 - Navajo Jewelry Item for Him or Her
$500 - Navajo Wedding Vase
$100 - Navajo Tea and Fry Bread Mix Gift Set
$50 - Thank you video in Navajo language

Dear Donor:

It is my great pleasure to invite you to a historic celebration at Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation on January 11, 2019 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM for a ribbon cutting of our Specialty Care Center, Health Promotion/Disease Prevention Fitness Center, and the Community Counseling Center.

The celebration will be a momentous time for our community, organization, and most importantly, our patients. Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC) is proud to launch an oncology center right here in Tuba City! The center will provide Navajo, Hopi and San Juan Southern Paiute cancer patients and their family’s treatment locally rather than traveling hundreds of miles off the Navajo reservation for cancer care.

In addition, TCRHCC will be opening the HPDP Fitness Center with larger fitness and workout rooms, and a classroom kitchen where food demonstrations and education classes will be held open to the public. Next door to the HPDP Fitness Center is the Community Counseling Center, which will provide outpatient counseling for our community members.

I hope you will join us in celebrating this commemorative event. The celebration is a pioneering effort to bring cancer treatment, prevention services, and counseling to the Navajo Nation.

If you plan on attending the Grand Opening ceremony, please RSVP by responding to or call 928-283-2993 to be put on the guest list.

Indians on large isolated reservations, i.e. Navajo Nation, face the greatest challenge in accessing cancer care because of the distance involved. The nearest cancer treatment is at least a 100 mile (one way), and as much as 500 mile, drive. #OncologyOnNavajo
