Larry's Story

August 3, 1965 – May 2, 2019

This GoFundMe page is to support the loving family of a special man whose life ended tragically and unexpectedly on Thursday May 2nd, 2019 when he was hit and killed in a head-on car crash while on the job.

Lawrence Richard Schroeder, known by all as Larry, was a devoted father, husband, son, grandfather, brother, relative, veteran, coworker, friend and all around good human.

Born in Madison Wisconsin, raised in Michigan, Larry was an intelligent and precocious boy whose (sometimes extreme) logic and practicality ruled his life. His mother Eileen remarks, with the utmost love, that he drove her crazy most of his young life.

Almost immediately after high school, Larry served 3 years in the Army as a Military Policeman and was profoundly impacted by this brief but important time of service.

Not fond of cold weather, Larry soon relocated to Texas where he met his wife Jennifer. From the beginning of their relationship, it seemed like fate had a hand in bringing them together. Larry and Jennifer always have and always will go together like bread and butter. The best of friends, they navigated through life as a team with a humor, companionship and loving grace that most of us can only hope to aspire to. To be fair, though, Larry did schedule his wedding between important football games for his two favorite football teams. Despite this huge faux pas, love prevailed and Larry and Jennifer soon had a beautiful daughter – Erin Grace.

Larry was not a hugger, nor did he love having his picture taken. He would tell you himself that he was not a particularly patient or sentimental person. He felt most at home in the framework of the sixties – an unapolagetically traditional family man. That said, all you had to do was vaguely scratch the surface (or maybe pour a drink or two) and it was easy enough to see that this man had the heart of a Lion. He took care of everyone in so many ways and, despite his aversion to pda, ended up being an affectionate pampaw to his two young grandchildren.

Larry loved to bake and his enchiladas were legendary, he still holds the Lake LBJ record for the largest channel fish catch on record. He was a light skinned redhead who refused to wear shorts or sunscreen. He was cheap and generous and always lit up the room with his razor sharp humor and broad ranging intelligence.

There is no way to quantify the massive emptiness that we feel without Larry here to watch out for us all. To say it will be a struggle for his wife, daughter, mother, sisters, grandchildren, family and friends to continue forward without him is the worst kind of understatement.

As a traditional family man, Larry also did the Lion’s share of financially taking care of not only his wife, but also anyone he loved and who needed help. If you can, please contribute to this memorial fund. With your help we will, thread by thread, begin weaving together a safe and loving place for his family to land and rest while they figure out how to go on without him.
