LARRY RUST FEBRUARY 18, 1953-NOVEMBER 25, 2016.

FORMER MEMBER OF IRON BUTTERFLY.

Our good friend Larry Rust (age 63) passed away in his sleep Friday at his home in the Los Angeles area.  Larry is survived by his son Daniel and his brothers Fred Mead, Michael Mead, Richard Mead and James Mead.

Larry was best known for playing with the band Iron Butterfly from 1999-2005.

"When Iron Butterfly played Arrow Classic Rock festival in 2004 in the Netherlands, the crowd was about 50,000. After we played we went to a tent where there was only Press & Vip's to sign autographs for. After that I asked where I could go to sign for people in the crowd. I was told it was NOT SAFE for me to go out front. I told them I would take my chances and went out into the crowd. People told me I was the only one from any band that played in 2 days at the festival that went out front. I didn't do it for a Brownie Badge. I did it because I always wanted the fans to know they mattered."

What others said about Larry Rust:

“IRON BUTTERFLY is saddened by his death and we will miss him. Larry was a great musician and a very nice man we will miss him as I am sure many others will.” - Mike Green, Iron Butterfly

“Good keyboardist music writer/arranger. IB crew and roommate with me and Walt Kibbey in the mid to late 1970's, played with the Butterfly, had a band back in the day called Elvin Tongue. Always came up with some cool stuff. Good pal these last 40+ years. He'll be missed.” - Partev Sarkissian

“Great guy and obviously a very talented man......he left a heck of a legacy” – Billy Craig, Brownsville Station

“He was a man with a giant heart that would give anyone the shirt off his back if someone needed it. He would often try to help struggling musician’s when they asked him for help. Larry had many friends and he was loved by everyone.” – Bernard Overly, syndicated radio show host

“He was a great guy. A big heart and champion for the voiceless.” - Cindy Teixeira, Seattle

A little background about Larry Rust.

Larry Rust was a genuinely gifted musician that became involved in music at the age of 8. He started with classical training on keyboards for 7 years. Playing in bands at the age of 14.

He had been involved with Midi and Midi Computer sequencing since the beginning. He has been involved in recording for the past 28 years developing his Engineering and Producer skills with tastes of the old style and the new style of producing records. He was currently working on several music projects before his passing on November 25, 2016.

He was an engineer who tried not to let technical boundaries, and preconceived ways to record, stand in the way of musical creation and making things just sound fat. He was also heavily involved in writing soundtrack music for feature and industrial films. With experience in recording R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, Contemporary Gospel, Rock, Pop, Rap & Country, Larry Rust had a well-rounded talent for recording.

Larry owned a recording studio, in his home for private production projects of Owen Avenue Productions. He also composed for Film Lease Libraries including The Firstcom/Hollywood Film Library/ BMG. He has done scoring for film & TV Including shows for History Channel.

Larry Rust has played live concert dates with the famous Classic Rock Band from the 60's"Iron Butterfly". He sang lead live on "In A Gadda Da Vida" From 1999 to December 2005. Larry is featured in 4 Live DVDs with Iron Butterfly.

Living Legends of Rock & Roll -- Live from Itchycoo Park Festival 1999, as well as being featured as Keyboardist & Vocalist for Iron Butterfly, Rock & Roll Greats Iron Butterfly, full length concert from Itchycoo Park Festival 1999, two releases from ABC - Entertainment GmbH, Arrow Classic Rock Festival (filmed live before 60,000) 2004 and live concert in Basil Switzerland Spring 2005 - "Heroes of Woodstock Tour".

At a very young age Larry was adopted and raised by his Grandparents in West Virginia. All six brothers were adopted at an early age. His brother Richard Meade tells us that “he was the one in his family with musical talent.”

The money will be used for his burial and handling his estate.  Money collected beyond the costs of handling his estate and the funeral will be donated to a charity that helps abused women. This was Larry’s favorite cause.

Larry's brother Richard has informed me that Larry is with them and we would like to thank you again for your help.

In 2017, we will try to piece together the two albums that Larry was working on. Some of Larry's friends will play on the songs. Each song will be a project. I found two sample mixes and lyrics for two songs. I hope Larry had the chance to record some of the lyrics.

It will take some time to track down everything he was working on. I did find one song that I may post on Facebook later. It was a Classical piece that Larry was working on for fun. It is very relaxing.

We will start with a four song EP to raise money for Charity. I have someone helping us review charities and one or more will be selected. This project could take more than a year.

I will be talking to the rep at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame about sending Larry's Keytar. They have shown interest in it.

We a still trying to take care of some of Larry's belongings that are in storage. His Studio equipment is being sold off to raise money to cover the expenses and the remainder will go to charity.

It is my hope that 2017 will be a better year. We lost so many friends in 2016.

Wishing everyone a great New Year!

Bernie and Larry's family.

A $3 donation is great, but $25 to $100 is much better. Give till it hurts, because then it feels wonderful... and it couldn't be a better time of year, to think of a fallen friend or family member, the way we all felt about Larry, and be able to do some one last thing for him. I've only just begun to process the emotions I have around his passing. I loved Larry, as if my own brother, and it would appear he was a brother to so many more around the world... Blessed Peace and Rest, my Friend, Bandmate, and Brother. All your pain is now gone, and in a small way, we each take on and carry some of that load for you.
