The Unity Centre has been open almost 10 years and offers unconditional support and solidarity to those in the asylum process or without papers. We want to start a language exchange! A conversation class where people can learn Arabic and Arabic speakers can learn/improve their English.
Arabic is a language spoken by many of our friends, from many different countries. In the future we hope to have classes for other langauges too.
The group will be volunteer run and all levels are welcome. The group will function collectively, so all ideas/suggestions/skills are appreciated - please email [email redacted] if you'd like to get involved, or for more information.
We will meet at The Unity Centre's office near Cessnock Subway Station - exact days and times, as well as the frequency of classes will be decided by the group, which is currently forming!
We want to improve our language skills and get to know each other in a supportive environment - an environment where English is not put on a pedestal and everyone is learning.
We want to make the classes affordable for everyone and we do not want people to be excluded because they cannot afford to travel to class. For these reasons the classes will be by donation - everyone will pay what they can afford. We will then use the money donated to cover others' travel expenses.
It is illegal for asylum seekers and those without leave to work, so destitution is common. People in the asylum process have £36 to live on per week, or £35 on an Azure Card which cannot be used to pay for transport. Others have absolutely no access to public funds.
This is why we must ensure that there is a pot of money so nobody is left out of pocket and that the classes are affordable for all.
Nobody will profit from the language exchange - any money we raise will go directly to covering people's travel expenses and buying simple refreshments for the classes.
All amounts donated are hugely appreciated. A bus pass in Glasgow costs £4.30.
