We lost an investment and had to lay off all of our co-workers--22 people in all. We need to get them back to work! Can you help? We're so grateful for the outpouring of support from our customers since our the news came out, and especially from the Lancaster community.
Why we created The Lancaster Food Company
We started The Lancaster Food Company to hire people with obstacles to employment out of poverty and into good jobs.
We're a second-chance employer, meaning we also hire people with records of incarceration--everyone deserves a second chance. Starting pay is $15/hr plus benefits, and we planned to offer employee ownership in 2018, because people should benefit from the value they help create.
What we do
To do this we make amazing certified organic breads and sell them through grocery stores and to restaurants. At the time of our closing, we were in over 350 stores and restaurants.
We do what we do well: Prevention Magazine named our organic sprouted multigrain its "Best Clean Packaged Bread" in 2016, and Pennsylvania Certified Organic named us its "Top Organic Manufacturer".
A commercial bakery like ours takes investment to get to profitability--and we're so close!
We've been growing fast, and expect to be profitable sometime this Spring.
Unfortunately we lost an investment of $250,000 so we had to shut down--it's especially hard on our employees with the holidays coming up.
The only thing we can offer at the moment in exchange for your donation is our deepest gratitude and the continuation of our mission to make delicious organic breads, hire people out of poverty and into good jobs, and support organic farmers as close to home as possible.
How will we use the funds?
We know that raising $250k is a long shot and we might fall short, but we will add whatever's raised to what we raise from investors (there's new interest!). We know there are people like you who believe in our mission as much as we do and want to help. If we come up short, we will use the money we raise to help our co-workers land on their feet and cover other expenses. Our management team will not be paid out of these funds.
We do believe that, with your help, combined with other investors, we can get back to work and get to sustainabiity.
And that would be amazing.
