Introducing La Maison Baldwin Cultural Center in Saint-Paul de Vence 

For 17 years until his death in 1987, the internationally renowned writer James Baldwin lived in a tiny village in the south of France called Saint-Paul de Vence. In a villa surrounded by gardens and overlooking the Mediterranean, he found the calm and refuge he needed to produce some of his most important work.

L’écrivain renommé James Baldwin a vécu 17 ans à Saint Paul de Vence, un village du sud de la France ou il est décédé en 1987. Dans une villa entourée d’un grand jardin et d’un bois, surplombant la Méditerranée, il a trouvé le calme et le refuge dont il avait besoin pour écrire certaines de ses œuvres les plus importantes


James Baldwin's oasis has been sold to a real estate development company, which is currently constructing a luxury apartment complex on the site. While a portion of the original house remains intact, much has been destroyed. The entrance to a parking garage now exists in the spot where Baldwin's desk once stood.


L'oasis de James Baldwin a été vendue à une société de développement immobilier, qui construit actuellement un complexe d'appartements de luxe sur le site. Bien qu'une partie de la bastide d'origine reste intacte, une grande partie de la maison a été détruite. L'entrée d'un garage de stationnement a été construit à l'endroit où se trouvait autrefois le bureau de Baldwin.




However, the development company has violated its building permit on several serious levels, and City Hall has halted construction.  A window of opportunity now exists to purchase the property and reclaim it as a place for writers and artists working in the Baldwin spirit.

What do we envision for the future of this important site? Possibilities include exhibition and performance spaces; conference facilities; a multimedia virtual reality visitors' center; and living quarters for writers-in-residence.

Donations toward this campaign will be designated for 1) the writer-in-residence program (more below); and 2) the legal battle to hold the developer accountable and ultimately to halt construction.


A ce jour, la société de développement a commis de nombreuses et graves infractions au permis de construire, ce qui a conduit la mairie a momentanément arrêter la construction. Cette intervention et ce délai nous offrent une opportunité de considérer le rachat de la propriété afin de la reconquérir pour en faire un lieu au profit d’écrivains et d’artistes travaillant dans l'esprit de Baldwin.

Qu'envisageons-nous pour l'avenir de cet important site? Les possibilités incluent des espaces d’exposition et de spectacle; salles de conférence; un centre multimédia pour visiteurs et des logements pour les écrivains qui seront en résidence.

Les dons destinés à cette campagne serviront à: 1) le programme d’écrivain en résidence (voir ci-dessous); et 2) la bataille juridique pour obliger le développeur à rendre des comptes et pour arrêter la construction.



This is a big dream. Making it a reality will take some time.

So this is not an ordinary start-up phase.

This fast-tracked start-up includes the launch of a writer-in-residence program  in Spring 2019 that will welcome 10 writers working in the Baldwin spirit--already selected from a highly competitive pool of candidates--to spend a month in St. Paul de Vence, creating plays, novels, essays and poetry.


C'est un grand rêve. Il faudra du temps pour en faire une réalité.

Il ne s’agit donc pas d’une phase de démarrage ordinaire.

Cette start-up accélérée comprend le lancement au printemps 2019 d'un programme de résidence  pour 10 écrivains travaillant dans l'esprit Baldwin - déjà sélectionnés parmi un groupe de candidats très compétitifs - ils travailleront un mois à St Paul de Vence, créant des pièces de théâtre, des romans, des essais et de la poésie.



It was James Baldwin's hope that his home someday become a residence for writers. With your support we will begin the work of fulfilling Baldwin's vision right away, as the process of acquiring his house continues.

To house the writers in residence, we plan to purchase the building in which our welcome center  is located, a 3-bedroom home in the historic village center. Here we will establish La Maison Baldwin Residence for Writers.


James Baldwin espérait que son domicile devienne un jour une résidence pour écrivains. Avec votre soutien, nous allons pouvoir commencer immédiatement à concrétiser cette vision, alors que se poursuit le processus d'acquisition de sa maison.

Pour loger ces écrivains en résidence, nous prévoyons d’acheter le bâtiment dans lequel se trouve déjà notre centre d’accueil, une maison de 3 chambres à coucher située dans le centre du village historique. Nous établirons ici la première résidence pour écrivains - La Maison Baldwin.



More than a year ago, our association, Les Amis de la Maison Baldwin  , opened its welcome center in St. Paul de Vence and has been educating the public, mobilizing the community, and watchdogging the Baldwin villa ever since.


Il y a plus d'un an en effet, notre association, Les Amis de la Maison Baldwin  , a ouvert son centre d'accueil à Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Nous sommes sur place pour éduquer, mobiliser la communauté et surveiller la propriété Baldwin.


Also on the horizon for 2019-2020 is an international Baldwin academic symposium, a Baldwin Art and Music Festival, and ongoing events and public education at our welcome center, which during the busy season welcomes hundreds of visitors per week.



An invitation to founding members

Start-up costs for the first two years of this project are budgeted at 500,000 Euros, the majority of which will be covered by major donors. About half of these costs will go toward supporting current programs and the other half toward communications, legal expenses, community organizing and fundraising.

The goal of this GoFundMe campaign is to raise 10 percent of our start-up budget from smaller gifts, as a way to demonstrate crucial early support from the grassroots.

Les coûts de démarrage pour les deux premières années de ce projet sont de l’ordre de 500 000 euros, dont la majeure partie sera prise en charge par les principaux donateurs. Environ la moitié de ces coûts financera les programmes actuels et l’autre moitié ira à la communication, aux frais juridiques, à l’organisation communautaire et à la recherche et collecte de fonds.

L'objectif de cette campagne GoFundMe est de lever 10% de notre budget de démarrage sur de plus petits dons, afin de démontrer un soutien crucial de la part des citoyens.
