La Bruja
Hi! I'm Eliza, I'm a writer on Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas on HBO and former Daily Show correspondent. I wrote and directed a short film that I am excited to share!

La Bruja is a bilingual dark comedy about a Mexican American girl who goes through a breakup, then meets a witch who offers to help her find herself. I grew up listening to my grandfather tell me magical realist stories— these dark yet optimistic tall tales he swore were true— and with La Bruja, I want to continue this special kind of Mexican American storytelling. I’d like to think that this is Pan’s Labyrinth meets The Mindy Project, so I'm gonna go ahead and slap a bold on that sentence too.

We have an incred cast:

Anthony Oberbeck (Comedy Central, Sex Talk)
Michele Carlo (The Moth Mainstage, NPR Latino USA)
Joanna Hausmann (Bill Nye Saves The World, Joanna Rants)
Ronny  Chieng (The Daily Show, Crazy Rich Asians)
Sophie Zucker (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Comedy Central's The Other Two)
Andy Bustillos (HBO's Girls, Divorce)
Karen Chee (The New Yorker, The New York Times)
Dillon Stevenson (HBO's Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas)
Mary Houlihan (Difficult People, The Chris Gethard Show)
Pedro Lee (Laid, Sidewalk Traffic)
Zach Zimmerman (The New Yorker, McSweeney’s)

We also have an incred crew, and I absolutely could not have done this without Hayley Kosan (Comedy Central, IFC) co-directing and DP-ing, Lexi Tannenholtz (Comedy Central, SNL) producing, and Haley Kim (Comedy Central) associate producing. Also, Luz Elena Mendoza of Y La Bamba composed original music for us and it RULES!

We've shot the film, but I need help covering some looming production and post-production costs, as well as festival submissions, marketing, and an NYC premiere. It would mean so much to me if you could donate a little bit OR share this on social media!

By supporting La Bruja

-- You are supporting female filmmaking.
This project was written, directed, produced, and edited by women. Every one of our department heads was a woman: camera, music, post, hair and makeup, costume, production, art design, and graphic design.  More than half of those women were women of color.

-- You are supporting Mexican American storytelling.
It goes without saying that Latinxs are wildly underrepresented in film and television. It also goes without saying that celebrating Latinx heritage is critical right now. The magical realism of my upbringing, this bending of what is real and what isn't, is a lens that helps me make sense of the current state of the world. I think this is something we can all use.

Any little bit helps!

That's all, thanks for reading. I am a comedy writer and wrote absolutely zero jokes in this description!
