Zack was on his way home from work on Friday July 15th and went off the road, hit a telephone pole and guard rail.  No one else was hurt in the accident.  Most likely concussed, he walked into the middle of the street and a truck swerved to miss him.  The truck caught the wires of the telephone pole and the telephone pole crashed down on his head.  The strike fractured much of the right side of his skull and then he was electrocuted.  He is currently in the ICU trauma center at Allegheny Hospital in Pittsburgh.  Because his brain was swelling, they removed 2 portions of skull to give it room.  He is currently being kept in a sedated state to give his brain time to rest.  When they take him off of sedation he is able to follow commands and respons with the right side of his body.  The left side responds to pain but is much slower than the right side.  He has localized DAI (diffuse axonal injury) in his brain stem, which means when he is allowed to wake up the rehabilitaion process may be long.   His family is there with him every day patiently waiting for the first signs of recovery.  For all of you who know Zack and how strong willed he is, you know that if anyone can pull through this it will be him.  For now we are just trying to be patient and allowing his brain and body to rest.  Because of the extent of his injuries, we expect the recovery time to be some years and his family and insurance will not be able to take care of it on their own.  We are reaching out now to all of you who know an love Zack and asking for your help.  He needs it.  He and his family will be so grateful for any assistance.   Please feel free to FB or email me for more info and updates.

Zack's standing frame and electric wheel chair/ battery have arrived and are being put to good use! He said that the standing frame, which he uses at least once a day to practice standing has helped with the pain in his bum, and he has been practicing in his motorized wheelchair a lot and next week is planning an outing with Colleen to the mall to zip around. His speech is improving everyday and he is becoming quite the conversationalist. A handicap accessible van is much needed for transport. That will be the next big purchase. Thank you so much for all of the love being sent his way and to his family! Please keep it coming and please keep him in your prayers and thoughts.

Zack is improving by leaps and bounds it seems. I talked to him this morning and he is quite the conversationalist. And funny. He has started to remember his accident and, for the first time since the accident broke down and cried when he asked Colleen to recount how everyone reacted to the news. He had dropped his phone, which made him swerve into the post as he tried to retrieve it. The standing frame arrives tomorrow and the electric wheelchair battery any day now. Really the last thing he needs is a wheelchair accessible van so he can get out of the house. Thank you everyone so much for continuing to keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He has come so far and still has a long way to go. Keep sending the love.

We found an electric wheelchair! Randy is picking it up tomorrow and all it needs is a new battery. Zack is excited as it will mean a bit more independence for him. Standing frame will be there next week. Now all he needs is a van. Thank you so much to everyone who has kept Zack in your thoughts and prayers. Please keep the love coming his way.

Happy Birthday Zack! Well, it was yesterday actually and he turned the big 28. He celebrated with his family and his Cure family at the Cure Christmas party, which doubled as a birthday party. He had a great time. His parents just purchased a standing frame, which gets him up in a supported standing position and allows his body to remember how to stand and re train those muscles. Next on the wish list is a motorized wheelchair and a van. Right now every time he needs to go somewhere out of the house they have to call special transportation, which arrives on their schedule and only operates certain hours. Also its so bumpy that it makes rattle out and makes Zack carsick nearly every time. Thank you everyone who has kept Zack in your thoughts and prayers and for the continued support for him and his family. He has come a very long way and still have a long way to go. Please continue to send the love!
