Kyle Waterbury-Drake Memorial

Donation protected
Anyone who knew Kyle would say that he is different from most. Intensely caring, sensitive, and thoughtful - dedicated to living an authentic and intentional life.  After a long journey through metastatic melanoma, he passed away on September 27th surrounded by those who loved him.

His family is asking for donations to his memorial fund to assist with medical and end-of-life costs, and also to appropriately honor Kyle's memory with a scholarship fund at Allan Hancock College in philosophy and poetry.

Kyle wandered through this world as a pilgrim, with eagerness to learn from, engage with and define his own path in life. Many who had the honor of meeting Kyle knew he was a big mind in a humble spirit.

Throughout his life Kyle kept to his core virtues and his primary trajectories: to be flourishing, to achieve self-understanding, to have natural engagement and, always forging growth-centered relationships.

Kyle’s journey was long and his trials in life were great. From open-heart surgery at age 13, to breaking many major bones, and suffering through depression and anxiety-- these obstacles refined him. His persistence, endurance and willingness to constantly challenge himself made him pure at heart and mind. Whimsical even. Kyle was first and foremost a philosopher, he sought meaning in the stories of others and made those narratives heal the inner dignity of all persons.  Avid reader, mediator, poet, and defender of freedom; he studied broadly and drank from the wealth of the world's knowledge.

Survived by his loving wife Leanne, parents Steve and Trish, younger brother Garrett and ruler-companion Steamy the cat.

You’re home Pilgrim.

Whimsy

We
bulky atoms and void
who pine
eternally
who take care
and stock
hungry to affirm
the whole

We
squishy water pockets
riders
at a million miles an hour
hanging out
vulnerable
with wild eyes
thrown into
spinning stories
stitched with bruise
and other lessons

I wouldn't change a thing

-Kyle Waterbury, 2014
