Please help Jeffrey hear

Hello Everyone,

My name is Rosie and my husband's name is Joel.   Let me tell you about our baby, Jeffrey.

Okay, he is not a baby exactly, but he is our new son!  Jeffrey was born in Shanghai, China.  We adopted him on May 12, 2014, so it will be two years this May!  Jeffrey's history is a bit of a mystery.  He was found abandoned at a bus station in 2008 and spent the next six years in a Shanghai orphanage waiting for us ( and we for him!).

Jeffrey is completely deaf.  He was never taught sign language, nor had he received any special education specific to his needs.  We knew this before we adopted him.  We arranged for all the resources he would need to thrive here in the States -- a fantastic regional school for the deaf and a wonderful doctor to assess him for a cochlear implant.  Jeffrey had all the necessary tests done and we were ready for the big day, only to find that our medical insurance covered the testing, but not the actual operation or cochlear device

We have pleaded with my husband's company to include the procedure so that our insurance will cover it, but his company declined because of the cost.  I have advocated for a lower price for the surgery with Dell's Children's Hospital, but even at the reduced price, it is completely out of our reach.   (Our savings were depleted due to medical bills from my three-year struggle with breast cancer from 2010 to 2013.)

I can not begin to tell you the heartbreak my husband and I feel because we are not able to provide our son with this operation.  We know that delaying the cochlear implant surgery may reduce the chance for a positive outcome.

Being able to hear even a little will change Jeffrey's life forever.  He will be safer in the world and he wants very much to speak, which is very difficult when he can not hear himself.  In the last year and half, Jeffrey has blossomed.  He has adjusted well to life in the United States and in our family. In his first opportunity to attend formal school, he has rapidly learned sign language and English. Jeffrey is an "A" student and receives nothing but praise from his teachers.  He wants to be a police officer when he grows up (although he thinks that when he writes tickets, he gets to keep the money!).

My family is blessed in so many ways.  We have a good life filled with love.  Please  considering helping Jeffrey's life to be filled with sound as well. Thank you.
