8 years ago I started to realize how destructive and unaccetptable our relationship with the earth is.
For 8 years I looked for a role model - someone to teach me how to be in the world and relate to the world in a way that resepcts life.
I finally found the kookums- traditional native grandmothers. Women who hold the teaching of "right relationship", that is, how to relate to the world from the heart, from a place of care. How to tread lightly.
These women are who I stand behind and who, I believe, we should all be standing behind. They understand the world in a way that we need to pay attention to.
Its their time to lead. Help me support them.
Kookums Helpers aims to support Kookums who want to do projects in their communities by sourcing funding and providing them with helpers.
Traditionally the kookums held tremendous power and used that power to guide their communities to be healthy and strong.
Today many of the kookums live in poverty and lack the support to fulfill their traditional role. Kookums Helpers hopes that by providing support we can return the kookums to their traditional role.
Our first project is to support Elizabeth Babin's medicine run. Elizabeth is a traditional kookum and ceremony person from Wahgoshig First Nation. Medicine runs are traditionally done in the spring. They are a time for kookums to gather medicine for their ceremonies, but also to do healing work in one anothers communities to strengthen ties between communites and ensure peace.
The budget for Elizabeths trip is $6500 ($5000 after Gofundme deductions). this will cover travel, lodging and food for herself and two young native helpers. Elizabeth will train the helpers durring the trip to carry on traditional teachings and preserve the culture. The Trip will take place in May 2016.
