Against All Odds: Round 2

$9,500 of $13,500 goal

Against All Odds: Outreach for Learning, Inc. is a small, family-run organization raising money for scholarships and school supplies for Baligham, Cameroon.

Keep this number in mind: 20.

Our co-founder, Pierre Nzuah, was raised in this small farming community and managed to work his way through school (there is no free schooling in Cameroon), and, through incredible perserverance, made his way to the U.S. where he completed a four-year engineering degree before entering a graduate program in fall 2015.

During our Round 1 campaign in 2015, we raised enough money to purchase 150 student benches and provide 88 scholarships, which we distributed across the six elementary schools in Baligham.

Now, we want to provide a second round of scholarships for the 2016 school year--continuing our support to the 88 students already on scholarship (assuming their academic work is good and they still have the financial need), plus beginning scholarships for a new group of students.

In addition, we want to purchase more benches and other supplies for each of the schools, including chalk, books, toys, pencils and notebooks.

Why is 20 important to our campaign? Because $20 is what it costs to cover school fees for one child for one year; $20 is what it costs to build and deliver one student bench; $20 is what it costs to buy a box of notebooks or a crate of pencils.

Think of it this way: $120 puts a child through elementary school--a child who would receive no education without this support.

Please visit our website aaool.org for more information about our 501c3's history and mission. You'll find many photos, audio and video clips, plus the story of Pierre, his American family and our trip to Cameroon during the summer of 2015. It's a remarkable story of family to family, friend to friend collaboration and love.

Keep checking back here or at our website for updates as our campaign and our work continues.

Special thanks to everyone who contributed to Round 1 and made it possible for AAOOL to do so much work in such a short time.

Thank you--from Pierre, Ellen, Laurie, Jake, Job and the whole Cameroonian and American team.

Friends,
Pierre and I owe you an apology for the long gap in communication. We have been waiting for almost a year to see how a regional work/education strike in the Anglo region of Cameroon played out. It is still up in the air.

What you need to know is that Baligham is located in the Anglo district of the country--most of Cameroon is French speaking. Long-time president Paul Biya is a Francophone and, beginning about a year ago, there has been organized protest activity in the Anglo region--people are upset about the lack of infrastructure and services, particularly as compared to the Franco districts.

You have not heard from us because we are awaiting the reopening of schools so that we can assess scholarship and supplies needs at the schools in Baligham. For now, we are holding all contributions in our Against All Odds account, ready to go into action to help students once the schools are open.

Thanks to all who continue to contribute, as well as those who have been so generous in the past two years. We are hopeful that we will see children back in school in the not-too-distant future, and we'll be in touch as soon as we are able to continue our work with them.

As always, with gratitude,
Ellen and Pierre

We've been on a brief winter break--Pierre received his masters degree from Clarkson and began working at an environmental engineering firm near Syracuse. We're still using last year's GoFundMe page but hope to put up a third year page with new goal very soon.

If you want to share some love this Valentine's Day, how about $20 or $40 to put one or two children through school next year? Lasts longer than chocolate or flowers :)

Love and peace to all of you,
Ellen and Pierre

In this holiday season, I hope you are surrounded by family and friends.

Pierre's younger brother, Job, who is our AAOOL coordinator in Cameroon, just sent us photos of the tables and chairs we had built--YOU had built--for each of seven elementary schools. We were able to have a table and chair made for every classroom.

Every $20 gift puts a child through school for the year. And, this year, we applied a portion of funds raised to buy tables and chairs. We're thinking about what to focus on next year--in addition to scholarships--and will let you know in the next few weeks.

Peace and love in the new year...everywhere.

I so admire what Pierre has done to become a mechanical engineer while at the same time never losing track of his roots.
