Kitabi Water Access Project Rwanda

Donation protected
Many people in developed nations take clean water and sanitation for granted, not realizing that in some developing countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, these basic necessities are not always readily available. Rwanda has certainly improved access to clean water and sanitation in recent years, but many rural areas of this densely populated country are still suffering.  In this largely agricultural nation, climate change now challenges Rwandans to deal with longer dry seasons, more intense rainfall, and warmer temperatures, all of which affect how they are able to grow crops and have enough clean water for daily household tasks.

Kitabi Sector is located adjacent to the Eastern entrance to Nyungwe National Park, the largest montane rainforest in Africa. Though the rainforest provides 75% of the water for the entire country, most of the Kitabi Sector lacks access to this clean water resource. A recent survey reveals some disturbing statistics:

-       Only 5% of the local population have water in their homes.

-       57% obtain their drinking water from local streams.

-       65% of the population spend 30-60 minutes per day just to fetch water from local streams and rivers.

The public health and economic consequences of poor water access in this community are clear, and urgent strategies are needed.

The Kitabi EcoCenter is a social enterprise site located on Mount Kitabi, near the Eastern entrance to Nyungwe National Park. This ecotourism center aims to improve the livelihoods of the local population through smart, eco-friendly strategies. One of these strategies is to improve water access to the EcoCenter and, most importantly, the local community.

Money from this campaign will be used by the Kitabi EcoCenter to accomplish the following:

-       construct direct access to water from Nyungwe Forest

-       use modern methods to pump water to the Kitabi EcoCenter, and use gravity to improve the flow and amount of water delivered to local populations

-       construct 3 additional water access pumps for the local villagers

-       construct a gray water recycling center using local materials to serve as a teaching site to help with water conservation

-       build a composting toilet demonstration utilizing sawdust

-       improve water and sanitation facilities for guests at the EcoCenter

Your contribution will make an immediate impact in hundreds of lives, ensuring a healthy future for Kitabi Sector and the country of Rwanda by providing access to clean water, an education model for water, sanitation and hygiene, Thank you for helping to make this world a better place for all.
