Help Kiribati's Maternity Ward

You shouldn't have to surf to give birth - Help save Kiribati Maternity Ward from tidal surges.

Starting a family is one of the most exciting experiences on the planet. But imagine starting one in a hospital with no power. Or beds. With wet floors.  Waves coming up to your knees. That is the reality in Kiribati.

The Betio Maternity Ward in Kiribati is under constant threat from rising sea levels, catastrophic weather events and crumbling infrastructure.  Last year, Cyclone Pam caused flooding so severe that the entire hospital had to be relocated to a nearby sports complex. Worse still, the Betio Hospital's plea to NSW health for some new equipment WENT UNHEARD.

We need your help to raise funds for the Maternity Ward, so they have the supplies they need to give Kiribati mothers safe and healthy births.

The hospital is vital to Kiribati. Located on the Tarawa Atoll – Kiribati’s capital – it serves about 20,000 people and accounts for roughly 16-20 deliveries per month.

While sea walls have been built, these require constant maintenance that is not currently available. King tides cut the Maternity Ward's power and leave it dark, damp and dangerous. Worse still, since Cyclone Pam, many women are forced to give birth on the floor - which is often wet.

The challenges of the Betio Maternity Ward highlight how climate change targets the worlds most vulnerable. While Australians enjoy safe and clean hospitals, our coal exports cause rising sea levels and extreme weather events that disproportionately affect our Pacific neighbours – neighbours who have contributed virtually nothing to global emissions (0.03 of global carbon emissions between all 17 countries).
