Vegan public elementary school
KING Charter School is preparing to be the first 100% plant-based and PUBLIC school in the world. Yes, several plant-based schools have popped up around the globe in the last few years, but all with a hefty tuition for parents to pay. Well the board members behind KING Charter Schools are working on the first charter school application to solve this issue and to make public education plant-based.
What is a charter school? Charter schools are public schools that are funded by local, state and federal tax dollars. Once a charter application is approved, the board members are given permission to open their own public school and enroll students that will pay $0 to attend!
What do we mean by a plant-based school? We are working very hard to make all cafeteria food 100% plant-based. We currently are allowed to serve 100% plant-based food but have been working with a legal team to get cow’s milk mandate changed by USDA or to raise funds to avoid taking USDA federal reimbursement. What is more, not only will our cafeteria be promoting the plant-based lifestyle but our nutrition classes will be 100% plant-based and all other curriculum. For parents of young children, you may recall seeing animal exploitation even in simple phonics books such as having your child look at an image of a sunny-side up egg with an arrow pointing to the yolk and having them to learn the “y” sound to fill in the blank. Or perhaps the story of the happy farmer collecting milk and eggs from all the animals. All these attempts of indoctrinating our children will be exempted from our curriculum. Math problems will only be plant-based, science, social studies, and learning about Thanksgiving and what we are thankful for will not include bizarre animal songs of the turkey trying to run away. But who would join this school you may ask?
Surely there are not enough vegan kids. We agree and so what we have done is designed a program that is a trilingual immersion in Spanish, English andMandarin. Trilingual immersion programs are the biggest trends in education and with a global world, it only makes sense to provide such a program to children. To get a similar education in the St. Pete area, you would need to pay roughly $15,000 for kindergarten for a private school that would offer these three languages. We also believe the trilingual immersion program will invite parents and community members who are generally left out of the plant-based discussions and would consider such a school for their child because of the immersion aspect. We have had expert linguists from around the world contribute to our application and review our program design. We are super excited. But wait! There is more!
In the state of Florida, once a charter school application is approved, you essentially have the application ready for every other county in the state of Florida ready. You would be changing very minor things in the application like county name, location of potential school. The majority of the application remains the same. In fact, one school, by the name of KIPP, opened in 1994 and now has over 100,000 students and 224 locations across the US. This is what KING wants to do with their program. We want to help other parents and communities to open their own plant-based school in their county. We are going through the challenging process of getting the first school up and running. Creating, procedures, program design, by-laws, understanding hoops and jumping through them so we can assist, train and help execute schools in every state where charter schools are allowed (42 states as of now).
We also want our school to be a focal point in the community. We want community members without children, parents of children to attend regular cooking demos, movie screenings, lectures, vegfests etc. If we are not starting with the children, then we have already lost the battle of spreading awareness to all about the ethical, environmental and health benefits of a plant-based diet. We need to make the American public education plant-based, not just expensive private schools.
Here is why we need your help now. Our application is being submitted by February 1, 2019 for our first school in Pinellas County, Florida (St. Pete area). In order for our application to be approved, we need to raise $350k. We are submitting our application with gofundme and kickstarter links for the reviewers to consider. The reason we need these funds is because there is roughly a six month waiting period before tax dollars are allocated to the charter school. These funds will only be allocated six months after facility, teachers, principal and enrollment have already been finalized and in place. To cover these six months we need the support of the community. After the first application is approved we have a great template to move on to the next county and eventually nationwide. It is our goal to branch into other states 3 years after the first application is approved. We want to move as quickly as ii is possible while maintain responsibility of ensuring high quality education for the children and families.
If you can only donate $5, please do, if you can only share it with 25 big businesses or donors, then please do. This is a huge milestone for us to get to this point, help us reach the next milestone of having an approved application by meeting our $350k goal.
