Kiah's New Beginning

$4,416 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 184 people in 4 months
**Update: I can't believe we surpassed our original goal! I never expected that, and we are so, so grateful. As of yesterday, Kiah tested positive for heartworms, and unfortunately that will be expensive to treat. Anything additional that we raise will go to the care of all our other CHS animals.

Kiah has been through more than any dog should. She was wandering the roads for 2 weeks before a kind soul picked her up. Cherokee County Humane Society took her on as a rescue when an owner couldn't be located. By the time we got her, we found some terrible things. Her teeth were filed down, she had clearly been overbred, and she was pregnant. We took her to a vet and found out that she had been shot at one point and that all the puppies in her belly had been dead for several days. The emergency c-section to remove the puppies saved her life. We've named her Kiah, which means "new beginning," and that's what we are going to give her. Please help us pay for her vet bills so we can find her a new, loving, forever home.

Kiah had a great day! She went outside all by herself and she was such a goofball when she came back inside. Look at her happy tail go!

Kiah visited the vet yesterday for a follow up. Her bloodwork revealed no abnormalities, her incision is healing really well, and her mastitis is almost gone. Unfortunately she did test positive for heartworms. We can't start treatment until her spirits are better, because the treatment can be pretty intense. It is also pretty costly, so your donations are extremely appreciated!
CHS is so grateful and touched for all the heartwarming thoughts you have sent Kiah. Here is a picture of her at her checkup yesterday - she was so brave!
Kiah wouldn't leave her room without her babies, so we brought them along

Hi everyone,

I'm seeing a lot of the same questions being asked, so I wanted to address some of those:

1. Kiah will be available for adoption through Cherokee Humane Society when she's been fully vaccinated and is healed and happy enough to make that transition. When she's available, I will update this page and you'll be able to see her as an adoptable dog on CHS's website:

2. Unfortunately, Kiah cannot nurse orphan puppies. Her milk has already mostly dried up, which is fantastic for her, because she had some pretty bad mastitis before her surgery. In any case, her nipples were so overused that most of them were not producing milk at all (and the ones that were were infected). Even before she lost her puppies, we were preparing to have to bottle feed them, since she wouldn't have been able to nurse them all by herself.

3. Kiah's puppies did not die from the shotgun injury. The x-ray showed old pellets near her spine, but since there were no flesh wounds or even scabs on her at that time, we have to assume she was shot several months or even years ago. The pellets are not hurting her or penetrating anything vital, so removing them would actually be more traumatic for her, since each pellet removal would be like a tiny surgery.

Medically, Kiah is recovering well. Her incision looks great and her mastitis is almost gone. The only concern I have for her right now is that she still is not eating or drinking unless I sit with her and offer it to her from my hand. She has a follow-up appointment with the vet tomorrow afternoon, so hopefully we can get some medications or ideas on how to cheer her up so she'll eat by herself. Thank you all for your kind words and donations! We appreciate you all so much :)
