Khaos Theory ACL Recovery!

Hi, I am Merry Khaos: roller derby skater, coach, announcer, ref, blogger, health coach, gypsy, etc. I have been urged to start a GoFundMe for my ACL custom brace & a motor vehicle. I'm not good at asking for help. If you're a fan of my Khaos Theory Blog please consider donating.

I had ACL reconstruction on March 22, 2016 using a hamstring graft. It cleaned out my bank account. I was left with $25, and up to 9 weeks out of work. By the time PT is done, I'll have paid them $400 for my copay. Plus, I have my normal health insurance payments to make along the way.

My healing process has been quick. At 5 weeks post op, I've been cleared to start running and I could go back to work IF .... I have my prescribed sports brace. It will be used for PT, training, and sports. This is a custom brace that insurance doesn't cover and costs $1200.

Concurrently, I am trying to buy a vehicle so that I can nab a job that pays a living wage. At the end of the year, I plan on moving back to Tampa. Without a vehicle and proper income, it will be impossible. Not just to move back to Tampa, but to get back up to a quality of life that involves not living with my parents. I have a degree in Communications and would like to use it.

I am more than willing and eager to WORK to make this money. I'm not looking for handouts, so I have created a list of rewards to offer. They will go out as quickly as possible. The boot camps will have to be scheduled for a couple months from now, but I'll be in touch right away.

To put things in perspective, as to why I'm doing a GFM, it's because I'd have to work 400 hours at my current job to make the money needed for my brace & a vehicle. 160 hours just for the brace. It's dangerous to start working hard until I can be sure that my surgery won't be undone by a wet floor, or by a sudden stop on my bicycle getting to work (and public transport is almost non-existent).

My anxiety has been off the charts while creating this fundraiser; so many people have helped me in the past. However, help is needed now. My commitment to the derby community remains unwavering. I will continue to do everything in my power to enhance it.

Just past 12 weeks post op and my latest appointment went as well as I could hope. I won't need a bone graft. My ACL graft is taking well. 3 more weeks and I can put on skates. I put a bar on my back yesterday and did 1/4 squats. SO AWESOME.

I've also recharged my Herbalife health coaching, and I'm taking on new clients. :D I had forgotten my passion for helping people be healthy. I have an especially strong passion for athletes with injury (I can't imagine why). I'm still booking coaching sessions, but now I'm also booking nutrition and health profiles too. Week 11: I'm moving into agility with my fancy brace, but my PT is worried about the lack of stability I'm showing in my PCL still. I can Bosu like a champ, but doing a full extension up stairs hurts like crazy still. It doesn't make sense.

The work situation hasn't helped me either. Standing for hours on concrete (or the edge of the tile to concrete) hasn't helped my recovery at all, so I'm not doing more than a few hours a day, which doesn't equate to much income. I'm actively seeking new employment and at home opportunities.

I've started Health Coaching again which has been awesome. My own health needed it. I kept up with my nutrition during injury, but now I can really play full out. If you need a health coach, derby coach, or anything else, let me know!!

I still am offering rewards for people who contribute to this fund. I'm still paying for physical therapy 3x a week to make progress, and still have a couple bills I'm finishing paying off from pre-op. If there is a service you think I could provide, let me know! We'll figure it out ^_^

Day 70 (10 weeks): I've got a 6 week nutrition challenge you can join, and lots of coaching incentives available <3

Today was my first PT appointment with my off-the-shelf DonJoy Armor! I did an 8 hour shift at Panera with it yesterday. It rubs on a couple spots and is not comfortable to wear for hours on end, but for PT it was great.

If this brace works, that means my funds will go towards my PT, other bills from my surgery (like my MRI, Xray, crutches, and meds), and towards a vehicle so that I can get a job that doesn't require me to wear the brace. My endurance is getting better, but at the end of a 5 hour shift, my knee is weak and super painful. Things are improving, but I'm still on a journey.

I have a lot of great things on my rewards list! Check it out. Nab some coaching for you or for your team. Have me build a practice plan for your team, or do some analysis and feedback. Until I can find a job that pays more than minimum, that I can work more than 20 hours per week, it will be hard to save up. Thank you for those who have helped already! Spread the word please. ^_^

Day 62: I kicked some uneven cement in our driveway yesterday (I was walking, not looking at my feet, and of COURSE it was my right leg that would catch it). I didn't feel a pop or anything, but the impact definitely shocked the joint enough that stairs are bad today and it feels tight when I walk. Today just isn't a good knee day. I'm trying to do some mild PT, but I'm still on full restrictions.

Wednesday is my ortho appointment. I just want to know what's going on. If I need to do a second surgery to tighten the ACL, then let's just get going with it. :( I want to put on rollerskates. I'd rather he just say "It's pain, just get used to it". Pain I can work with. Pain I can handle. I want to work. I want to lift. I want to be normal again.
