Conchita's Stroke Recovery Fund

$52,305 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 199 people in 54 months
On December 14th, 2014 Conchita Barkley, our beloved Circus Chocolates leader, had a stroke. We were all devastated, shocked, emotionally drained. Her right side was left paralyzed. Her entire life taken out of her control in a matter of hours.

The staff at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital have been fighting to normalize her blood pressure and now have her on a regular schedule of physiotherapy to try and regain her motor skills. After a long 45 days, finally some movement! Conchita now has some minor activation in her right leg, bicep, tricep and pectoral muscles. We are absolutely thrilled! The journey home has finally begun. Alas, it will be a long, and expensive one. Our health care system unfortunately only covers a certain percentage of the costs associated with recovery. Marshall and Conchita still have to pay the other percentage of physiotherapy sessions, a wheelchair, medications, home renovations and other as yet unforeseen costs.

This is where we come in to help! The more people we can get this message out to, the more attainable the goal will be, so please help me spread the word to everyone that has ever been touched by Marshall and Conchita's kindness and generosity.

Peace, love, and chocolate!

It is time to close the door, turn the key to this fundraiser and tuck it safely into our hearts forever. In the planning stages of this project, we set the goal high, never thinking we’d actually reach it, however, it turns out love is ubiquitous and your generosity, contagious.

I recently visited Conchita and Marshall. Her progress is astounding from when I last saw her in April, though she still tires from the extra effort it takes to complete normal tasks. Her speech, in my unprofessional opinion, is near fully regained. She can walk with a cane for short periods of time, including up and down stairs, She can grasp a utensil with her affected right hand, though she can’t quite yet use the limb on command. The physiotherapy and progress continue. I hope to one day hear her play guitar and piano again.

I know that many of you have connected with Marshall and Conchita outside of this fundraiser and will continue to do so. This is goodbye to the website, but not to the lifelong friendships.
Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli - Time to Say Goodbye

A poem by William Wordsworth~
What though the radiance which was so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind;
In the primal sympathy
Which having been must ever be;
In the smooth thoughts that spring
Out of human suffering;
In the faith that looks through death,
In years that bring the philosophic mind.

We are so incredibly close to our goal of $50,000. In the last few weeks you will notice a few GIGANTIC donations that came in. Conchita and Marshall are continuously overwhelmed with emotion over the kindness and generosity of every donor.

They feel it is time to bring the fundraiser to a close, and so we will be doing so in a few weeks. Thank you again to every single person who donated every single dollar to this chance at a new life for Marshall and Conchita.

Please grab a tissue and stop everything for 3 mins to listen to this song chosen by Marshall.

A note from Marshall. It set me at ease, I hope it does the same for you.

It has been six months since Conchita's stroke and since then we have settled nicely in our new home and established a somewhat normal routine. Her blood pressure has been stabilized, greatly diminishing her fears of having a second stroke. The greatest gains are made in the first year after the stroke. That is why Conchita is focusing all of her energy on therapy. Therapy is four times a week with daily exercises to strengthen her arm and leg muscles. She is working on gait training and periodically walks with an ankle foot orthosis or brace to help her weakened foot. She has even walked on uneven ground to join in around the camp fire and down several aisles in a few stores. Recovery is physically and emotionally draining and Conchita is quite fatigued most of the day. Even in these exhaustive states, the songs of the birds outside brings her joy and awareness. She has regained movement in her arm and fingers and is now able to make a fist or grasp with much effort. With the increased strength in her arm, she is experiencing less shoulder pain and spasticity. Each week brings about small, but significant gains in Conchita's recovery and confidence, a step in the right direction. She is very grateful for all the love and kindness that she has received. It has brought her a sense of peace knowing so many care and share in her struggles.

Enjoy this song from Conchita...
