As you may be already aware, the state of Kerala has been bashed with heavy rains and is suffering from catastrophic floods for the last couple of weeks. More than 300 people lost their life and hundreds of thousands have their homes and livelihoods. Close to a million people are living in flood relief camps. For the first time in the history 30+ reservoirs of the Kerala state are opened as they got filled and that caused additional flooding in the downstream areas. The devastation caused is unprecedented and never seen before.  The floods destroyed crops and infrastructure to unthinkable extent.

At this hard times, Malayalee Association of St. Louis ( www.stlma.org) is organizing this fund raiser to collect donations from the kind hearted St. Louis citizens to support the rehabilitation efforts. Please donate generously!

Dear Friends and well wishers,

Thank you for donating generously to this noble cause and sharing it with your friends, we reached the target! We are humbled by the love and care shown by everyone towards the sufferings of the people affected by this calamity.

There are few more donation offers coming in, so we are going to keep the fundraiser live until all of them are received and added to the fundraiser. This fundraiser serves as single, transparent view of all donations STLMA is receiving for this cause, including the donations coming outside the GoGundMe platform.

We starting to work on distributing the funds collected to appropriate beneficiaries. The fundraiser was started with Kerala CMs disaster fund as the main beneficiary, but we received suggestions from many donors and community members about exploring options for finding eligible direct beneficiaries in addition to CMs fund. The STLMA Committee is discussing this option, we will share once we make a final decision on this.

Regarding the current status in Kerala, flood waters have receded in most places, except some areas of Alappuzha district. Damage caused to houses, businesses, public places and infrastructure are estimated to be around 20, 000 crore rupees. Currently people are trying to dig out and clean their houses and businesses. The cleaning process could take couple of months and many more months for affected people to come back to their normal life. The rebuilding is going to take months or years and requiring huge amount of effort and money.

We are trying to do our best to make sure the donations received are used to be best possible extend. Will keep you all posted on utilization of the funds received. You should start seeing them in couple of weeks.

Thanks & Regards
STLMA Committee

Here is an update on the current status of Kerala Flood:

After two weeks, finally heavy rains have eased or stopped in most parts of Kerala. Water is starting to recede in many heavily flooded areas revealing the almost total loss of property and infrastructure. Rescue operations are nearing completion. Army, Navy, local government officials and every citizen of the Kerala are coming together without the barriers of religion, caste, political affiliation, class or status and working together to do whatever they can help the affected people. Donations and support is pouring in from many states of India and every corner of the world. In severely affected areas. most families lost every thing, have to start from scratch. Rebuilding the infrastructure is a mammoth task!

Since the flood impacts turned out to be much worse that initially thought, we are increasing the target of this fundraiser, to bring in the maximum donations and support possible.

Thank you all for the generous support for this cause!
