I am a junior at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, studying piano. Wheaton is a very prestigious school so I’m only able to attend because of scholarships and loans for housing. I’ve been able to make it for the past two years, but this year something out of my control came up that I might not be able to pay for my housing.
My dad abandoned my mom, my brothers, and I when I was sixteen. Since then our family has struggled because my dad does not pay all his child supports. He makes a six-digit salary, but we barely see any of it because he hires lawyers to get him out of paying child support.
Because of my dad’s refusal to support my education, there have been multiple crises with my financial aid. My mom and I have managed to get around them, but this time we can’t make it. One of my largest loans has been rejected because my dad did not disclose some of his debts and passed forward bad credit onto my mom, making her finances and credit ineligible for any housing loans in the future.
Therefore, I have two weeks to come up with $7,895 or I won’t be able to register for classes next semester and will probably have to take the semester off.
If I have to take a semester off, I’ll have to start paying back my student loans immediately without a job that pays enough to do so. Without a degree from a Music Conservatory, I won’t have the credibility for that sort of position. I want to go on to grad school and I also need a degree for that. I’d also be separated from my friends and professors who are hugely supportive of my difficult situation.
Wheaton is a huge piece of my life. It’s the only college campus I’ve visited where I’ve felt safe living in the dorms. The community here is strong and supportive. I’ve been able to grow mentally and spiritually through my classes and the meaningful relationships I’ve formed. I’m on excellent terms with my professors and classmates and that has helped me to perform well in my classes. If it weren’t for the community of faith I have here, I don’t know how I’d be able to have such a rich college experience.
My mom and I can’t come up with this amount of money in time. My dad won’t help. So I’m stuck. This GoFundMe is my last resort and really only hope of staying in school. It’s not easy for me to ask this of people; I wouldn’t ask for funding if I didn’t have any other option.
Please, whatever you can give would help.
