Holly's Helping Hand

Our Story:

October 2015 was supposed to be a month of celebration and excitement for Holly and me. She had been working extremely hard over the past year to complete schooling for her passion and career of choice: massage therapy. Anyone that knows Holly knows that she is extremely gifted in massage therapy and genuinely loves to help others and relieve peoples stress. As a gift for all of her hard work, as well as our one year anniversary, I wanted to treat her to a vacation to Rocky Point, Mexico for a romantic getaway. The day after her graduation ceremony, we packed our bags and took off to a vacation that we would never forget. This vacation meant a great deal to us, as she had never been on a real vacation before. I was determined to make it perfect. The weather was beautiful, scenery was breathtaking, and her smile melted my heart! On our last day in Rocky Point, we decided to take a ride down the coast on a Rhino to explore the area. We had a blast!

After riding around for about an hour, we wanted to call it a day and head back to the hotel. Unfortunately this is where the story takes a turn for the worse. When going down a small hill, the vehicle hit a large rock, launching the rhino sideways rolling down the hill. I was in a state of shock after landing upside down and pulling myself out of the rhino. As I walk over to the other side of the Rhino, I saw Holly, covered in blood and telling me we need to get to a hospital. Her hand had become caught in between the steering wheel and the ground when the rhino flipped, completely destroying it. I knew she was losing blood very quickly so I took off my shirt and attempted to stop the blood flow to her arm. I quickly realized there was no chance of flipping the rhino back over, so I took her arm and wrapped it over my head to carry her back into the city. Three Miles later down the beach we finally found another couple in a trailer, who was able to call an ambulance.

The news only got worse once we arrived at the Hospital in Rocky Point. They were unable to help her as the degree of injury was beyond the doctor’s expertise. He advised me that due to the injury of her hand it was very likely that she will lose her hand and she was lucky to be alive after losing so much blood. The doctor told me to drive her in my car back to the US and find a hospital ASAP. I knew that time was of the essence and I requested to have them take us by ambulance. After a few credit card swipes they agreed... 4 hours later she was admitted into Abrazo Hospital in Goodyear, AZ. We were very lucky to have been admitted into a hospital that had one of the best hand surgeons in the state, Dr. Edward Reece. He immediately made it clear that her thumb would not make it and needed to be amputated completely, a devastating blow to Holly. Over the next few weeks she would be in and out of surgeries (a total of 8 so far) to reconstruct her hand.
The thing that surprised me the most is Holly's positive attitude and uplifting spirit. She was a favorite patient to many nurses and doctors and warms the hearts of anyone she is around.
Unfortunately the news only got worse. Our doctor told her that blood flow to her fingers had stopped and her 3 other digits had to be amputated as well (leaving only the pinky). As someone who had chosen massage therapy as a career, the news was crushing. Holly is still determined to be an amazing massage therapist and with the support of family and friends I know she will be one of the best in her field.

What we are raising money for:
After months of debates, appeals, and denials; we are being told that her insurance will not cover her prosthetic. They are classifying a prosthetic as a "cosmetic device" that is not covered under her insurance. Despite all of her doctors vouching that the prosthetic is a medical necessity and needed for normal function, they refuse to budge. I have promised Holly that she will have a hand no matter what I have to do.

Her prosthetic has been quoted at an astounding $25,000. (non-mechanical passive). I will be using all donations to pay for the down payment of her prosthetic hand.

How soon I need the funds:
I am hoping that by the 1 year mark from the accident (Oct 2016) I will be able to afford her prosthetic.

Why this means so much to her:
Not only will this prosthetic give Holly the confidence to be able to feel normal again, but this prosthetic will allow her to return to the field of work she is so very passionate about. After everything she has been through over the past 8 months, she deserves a helping hand.

Any amount helps. Thank you so very much. If you cannot financially contribute, please share so others can hear her story.
