Keep Mudfish Going

$1,230 of $10,000 goal

Mudfish was started in 1983 to publish poems I believed in, including my own. Ten years before that I had published my first book of poems, Mink Coat. I partnered with an artist, Vladimir Urban, to make Mudfish a journal of art, poetry, and fiction. John Ashbery was generously on the tiny Board. We wanted to help deserving poets and artists since I knew from personal experience how difficult it was to get work published. The publishing industry has become more inaccessible since then, especially for older authors. Mudfish publishes known and unknown artists and writers, and needs your generosity to continue to do so. Box Turtle Press, which publishes Mudfish and its companion volumes, Mudfish Individual Poet Series, is a non-profit that would use this money to maintain a regular publishing schedule. We have published over 31 books since 1984, and now have a list of books that need to be released, including a posthumous second book by Mary du Passage. My own limited funds have been exhausted, and the money raised from a poetry contest for each issue of Mudfish has dwindled as contests have proliferated. We are hoping to raise this money as soon as possible, as Mudfish 20, dedicated to the late John Ashbery and Doug Dorph with my paintings of Donald Hall, and his late wife Jane Kenyon on the front and back covers is at the printer. The second payment is due before shipping. The journal has become increasingly respected, admired, and well-known. The books by individual poets are important, original, and moving. Since founding Box Turtle Press and starting Mudfish, publishing talented artists, writers, and poets has unexpectedly become my life's work. Their gratitude to me at making their dreams of publication come true has been its own reward. And I would be equally grateful to you, to have your financial help to continue to do this valuable work.

We are very pleased to present the final cover, which we think worthy of Mary du Passage's final work. Please help us to send this intimate and beautiful book to the printer and ship it to our distributors and in turn to you, poets and readers, so that she can live on in her work and touch your lives forever.

Thank you so much for helping us publish Mudfish 20, which one contributor called "the unputdownable Mudfish."

We urgently need your help. Mary du Passage's second and posthumous book, Notes for a Love Poem, is nearly ready for publication . Her first collection, Marbles, was published by Box Turtle Press in 2009. Our goal is to publish this riveting and unique book-length poem in October .

Of Notes for a Love Poem, Stephanie Emily Dickinson writes:
"In Notes for a Love Poem we listen to the magnificent ruminations of an insomniac, the blue hours around 3 a.m. fermenting du Passage’s sensuous Southerner imagination. Her nightscape of Mozart and La Traviata when the quiet is her companion. Can the poet’s anxiety be alleviated by her defiant love poem for Gérard, her husband for decades, now remarried? 'You tell me orchids grow wild/all around your house/you share with your love/in Thailand now.' Thailand, a world away from Mary in Louisiana...we are privy to the poet’s thinking, as if there is nothing not poem-worthy —her Honda, her death wish, a catalogue’s silk scarves, a friend’s breast cancer....The reader experiences so much pleasure as we taste the era du Passage writes from, sprinkled with the piquant flavors of the French language and heritage. Post-a-notes of the sublime."

We need your support to make this beautiful book, Mudfish Individual Poet Series #12, a reality.
