Jenny Morris attended the concert at the Oakland warehouse with her close friend and roommate Vanessa Plotkin along with many others that fateful night on December 2nd, where an intense and uncontrolled fire broke out resulting in a tragic loss of life for so many.   She was 21 years old and was excited about her major in Media Studies and the opportunity to study at UC Berkeley.   She volunteered at the UC Berkeley radio station KALX, where she assisted in selecting music from multiple genres that would be played on the air.

Jenny expressed her creativity and love of life in many ways through 35mm film photography, composing, singing and recording music both individually and within groups. Several of those recordings were published to her personal YouTube and SoundCloud accounts.  She followed multiple music genres and enjoyed attending concerts, art shows and other creative events with her friends. Music and art were an integral part of her life and thoughts.

To honor her memory, we’ve established this fund to provide resources to specific organizations and individual artists to support several projects including (but not be limited to) the visual arts, music and photography.

By incorporating the ideas and feedback from the artistic community, we will mindfully guide the selection and funding of various projects in the coming weeks and months.   We will encourage the artists who receive funding to post photos and/or comments as they progress and complete their projects on social media for others to follow and enjoy.

We love and miss our beautiful Jenny so much.  We’d like to ask you to partner with us to help keep this dream alive on behalf of Jenny and our family.

We wanted to provide an update for the ‘Keep Jenny’s Dream Alive Thru Art and Music’ project.

We’ve discovered a wonderful organization called the ‘Ukulele Kids Club’ and have funded a third project focused on bringing music to children in hospitals. The organization’s mission statement is as follows:

“The Ukulele Kids Club mission is to harness the healing power of music by supporting music therapy programs and gifting ukuleles to hospital-based music therapy programs so that children in need can be sent home with the gift of music for life.”

https://theukc.org/

Through your generosity, we were able to sponsor 100 kids in 20 pediatric hospitals nationwide with new ukuleles this year. Jenny’s dream and your partnership has truly given these children the gift of music that will last a lifetime.

We’ll continue to work to find other worthy projects and post periodic updates for everyone.

Thanks again,
The Morris Family

Thank you so much for your generosity and your support for our family to keep Jenny’s dream alive! We’ve identified the first two projects to be funded involving music and the arts. The first project will help fund several classes to teach art in a hands-on environment to elementary school students. The program is called Art in Action and is offered at Audubon Elementary School in Foster City. The second project consists of a merit-based scholarship to one graduating senior who has been active in the choir program at San Mateo High School. Jenny attended both schools and enjoyed singing as a member of the SMHS choir throughout her high school experience.

We want to personally thank each and every one of you who have so generously donated to this cause on Jenny’s behalf! We greatly appreciate your thoughts and support for our family.

As we move forward on selecting the first project(s) to fund, we have been researching various communities and organizations of like mind. Here is a site that we found that provides what we think is a good model by providing $1000 micro-grants. The organization is called ‘The Awesome Foundation’ and their website is: http://www.awesomefoundation.org. Some other organizations that we’ve found include ‘The Bay Bridged’ ( http://thebaybridged.com) and ‘We the Artists of the Bay Area’ ( http://artistsofthebay.org/). If you have ideas for other organizations, projects or specific artists that you’d like to share with us, please add them as a comment below.

We’ll provide another update to this site when the first project is finalized and the funds distributed.

Although I did not know Jenny, personally, I have the brilliant experience of working with her father, Michael Morris and his family, and because of that, I know that she is in a better place now, for God only picks the prettiest flowers.
