Luis Guerrero, owner of Great Plates in Tallahassee, has overcome quite a few obstacles in the past few years: struggling in college, troubles with the law, creating and owning his own successful business. While in college, he underwent some misfortune which resulted in the loss of his financial aid. Due to those tough times, Luis turned to selling drugs in order to make up for the financial loss. He ended up doing time in the system, where he was able to reflect on his life goals and self-empowerment. He knew he would have a record upon returning to society and that finding work was not going to be easy. To get back on his feet, Luis resorted to his talents of catering. He began selling plates to friends and family. The outpour of support led him to opening his own restaurant called Great Plates, located in Tallahassee.
The restaurant received praises from the community sinceopening a year ago and has retained that support ever since. The community loves and adores the success story behind the restaurant and the owner. Great Plates provides gourmet food, good vibes, diverse music, creative menus and high quality ingredients at the lowest prices possible. Not only is the food,inspiration and music a staple to the restaurant, but its core values and beliefs are as well. The restaurant has dismantled the inequity that often exists in fast-casual establishments. Despiteovercoming obstacles to maintain success, the restaurant has taken another hit and is now in need of the community’s assistance. Great Plates is unable to reopen its doors until a Fryer Hood is installed; a fundamental piece of equipment used to ensure the safety and protection of employees and the restaurant, as well as the quality of food. Great Plates is seeking donations from the community to assist in purchasing the gearneeded to continue a safe business. The restaurant’s goal is to crowdfund $15,000. Great Plates hopes to be able to reopen their doors very soon and to continue in providing the community with its mission: to provide soul food to nourish the soul!
