Karl Towndrow, three months old, died on July 13th while at SoHo Child Care in Manhattan. It was his first day at the facility.

Karl was beloved by his parents, who doted on him every moment. He was their joy and brought happiness to everyone who met him.

His family and friends are grieving but are taking comfort in knowing they knew this sweet, innocent soul, even if it was all too brief.

In an effort to help his parents, given the unexpected and significant expenses they are now facing, we are launching this campaign in Karl's memory. The funds will go towards any funeral expenses and support for the family.

Karl's family would like to thank everyone who has offered their condolences and is offering support during this painful time.

Please share this link with anyone who might want to support Karl's family.

Note to the media: The family asks you to honor their wishes for privacy.

Karl's parents have set up a website where you can advocate for paid parental leave in his honor. Please visit www.ForKarl.com where you can call, tweet, or email your representative to support a paid parental leave bill.

Karl's mom has written about losing her son, and the push for sensible parental leave policies in the U.S. You can read that at the NY Times: http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/11/15/a-baby-dies-at-day-care-and-a-mother-asks-why-she-had-to-leave-him-so-soon

Thank you all so much for your support. The response to this campaign — which was set up for Amber and Lee's family, friends and colleagues to help — has been overwhelming. This support will help them pay for funeral and memorial costs, hospital bills, missed work days and other unexpected expenses from this tragedy. They are incredibly grateful for your lovely generosity, and for having shown them how many good people there are out there who just want to help.

I'm in tears with you as I read your NYT blog. My daughter was born 3 weeks after Karl and I felt the same tug and pull of emotions going back to work. I'm so sorry for your loss. You've inspired me to take action for parental leave reform; a system that I've long detested but never acted on. Stay strong.
