2018 Campaign
Be a community builder! Last year REVE Kandale Foundation, with the support of over 125 brickmakers, raised $25,000 to purchase a brickmaking machine for the small, remote community of Kandale, Democratic Republic of Congo. The community has now produced over 7,000 bricks towards its goal of 9,000 bricks needed to build a multi-purpose education center.

The needs in Kandale are great but so is the local initiative to build a strong, healthy community. We stand with our local partner organization in Kandale and are setting our sights higher in 2018! Join our 2018 campaign to raise $55,000 to help the residents of Kandale achieve their goals and change lives. Your donation will help the REVE Kandale Foundation:

1. Build a multi-purpose education center with solar-generated electricity (donated by a partner) so students can study at night, provide space for teacher training, community meetings, computers, a library, sewing machine stations for students enrolled in sewing courses, and appropriate space for students from throughout the area to take the annual state exam. Local residents have already donated to the project and manufactured over 7,000 bricks for the education center! Additional materials and skilled tradesmen are still needed to make the education center a reality.

2. Support opportunities for girls who often lack access to an education. With support from a partner organization, RKF has provided over 300 girls with hygiene reusable pads and training. Use of the pads allows girls to attend school when they otherwise would stay home for a week or more when menstruating. We will expand that effort to reach more girls by purchasing sewing machines so students in the school sewing section can make the hygiene kits in Kandale and surrounding areas while advancing their education at the same time.

3. Provide teacher training and materials so that teachers have access to the state curriculum, the most up-to-date materials, and the skills to teach the curriculum (more than half of Kandale’s teachers have only a high school diploma and use the materials they save from their high school classes). The high school has only a small number of books in French and classrooms often lack a usable chalkboard…or even chalk!

4. Continue reforestation projects to restore biodiversity that has disappeared. Indeed, recent reforestation has resulted in the return of caterpillars that nest in the trees and provide residents an important source of protein in their diet. The forest also provides a variety of nutritious fruits for consumption or sale at a local market.

Thanks to donors like you, the REVE Kandale Foundation has already raised almost 70% of its $55,000 2018 campaign goal! We are pleased to report that construction of a multi-purpose education center began in May (see photos) and solar panels are scheduled to be installed by a generous volunteer in October. We have also secured partial funding for sewing machines – an important strategy for helping girls stay in school. And we are inspired by the many Kandale community members who have stepped up to purchase supplies and to volunteer their labor. Because of the remoteness of Kandale and the difficult roads, we have scheduled reliable transportation in October for the solar panels.

We now have an urgent request for your help. RKF must raise $10,000 towards its 2018 goal by September 15 so that:

* All 30 sewing machines and station supplies can be purchased and transported to Kandale in October. The machines will enable more students to pursue and complete their education and take their state examinations. (a $300 donation will purchase one station)
* The education center is completed so students and teachers can begin using it as the new school year begins (a $300 donation will purchase desks with chairs for one classroom)
* Teacher training can be scheduled and state curriculum materials can be purchased as soon as possible in preparation for the all-important state exam in 2019

Please share this GoFundMe link with a personal story of why you are a Kandale Community Builder, or make a donation to let the people of Kandale know that this will be the best school year ever! We must reach our $10,000 goal by September 15 to ensure that all supplies are delivered in October and the multi-purpose education center is completed and in use at the start of the school year. We are grateful for your support…more importantly, thank you for changing lives in Kandale, Congo (DRC)!
