Access to Clean Water in Rwanda!

Last summer, Kali to Kali (Village to Village) completed its second project in Rwanda. Through the last two years we've had the opportunity to build eight water tanks and over one hundred vegetable/fruit gardens. In total, our initiatives in Rwanda thus far have reached over three thousand people. Kali to Kali will continue to support clean water initiatives and continue to address the malnutrition issues that plague many villages throughout Rwanda. This summer, we're hoping to continue our efforts (in the Bugesera and Wwamagana districts) and continue to bring access to clean water and proper nutrition to those in need.

In 1994 the genocide in Rwanda killed over 1 million people, displacing the demographic structure of the country. Leaving an unstable domestic infrastructure with women and orphans left as the heads of many households, millions suffered greatly. It is estimated that about 44% of Rwandan children suffer from stunting, which means they are unable to adequately develop due to malnutrition.

During our time in Rwanda, we also had the opportunity to meet villagers and students where our project was being conducted and listen to the issues many faced. We met children who would go an entire day without eating, we met parents who wouldn't eat for days so their children could eat, and we met parents who's children had drowned while attempting to retrieve water for their family. Many villagers we met explained that they had a lack of access to nutritional food, many travelled several miles each day to retrieve water, and that many of their children had to work to support the family as well.
