Kaila Rain's Graduation Fund

$4,095 of $13,000 goal

Raised by 68 people in 6 months
Created July 17, 2018
"For the last five years, I've been working toward a college degree.  I've worked extremely hard to get where I am today. I am nearly at the finish line; I only have one semester to go. But there's one huge thing standing in my way of completing my college education: Money.

USF has informed me that because this is my ninth semester, they will not grant me the need-based scholarships that they have been for the last 8 semesters. I've asked for their help and they say there's nothing they can do. So it's time for me to ask my friends and family for help. I've never been the kind of person to ask for anything, but now's the best time to start.

I haven't given up. I'm applying for scholarships every day, but I don't know how much that will get me. I need help. Growing up, I always heard my mom say that it takes a village to raise a child. I need my village now more than ever."

To everyone who donated to Kaila’s Graduation Fund, I wanted to say thank you again.

Because of your kindness and generosity, she will be graduating in a couple of weeks! I couldn’t be more proud of her and proud of her community for stepping up in a time of dire need.

Too often, we either suffer in silence with a problem that is far too big for any one person to overcome or wait until the situation is at a critical point which is beyond help.

Luckily, we were able to get ahead of this problem before it was beyond fixing. Ultimately, we raised enough money to allow Kaila to set up a payment plan which bought us enough time to work the backend and thankfully Kaila was able to push through and find academic advocates to bring her situation to the attention of the President of the University.

Because Kaila has been such an awesome student and positive role model within the USF community, he made the decision to make sure that her remaining finances were covered! It’s something that they say NEVER HAPPENS! So it was something of a miracle. Also, it was the right thing for him to do, and we appreciate it.

Again, I want to thank each one of you for your contributions - large and small. You should feel great about being part of such a meaningful community effort. We literally would not have been able to accomplish this important goal without our larger community!

Happy Holiday Season to all.

With Love and Gratitude Always,

Jacquie

From Kaila:

I finally have a stress free moment to update you guys on the status of my financial situation at USF. YA GIRL’S GON GRADUATE IN DECEMBER! My favorite professor/idol/college mom, Dr. Candace Harrison, a woman who I’ve looked up to and loved since I was a lost freshman, helped me come up with a plan that would allow me to graduate in December and pay less. Since I only need 12 credit hours to graduate, I’ll only be taking the 2 history classes (8 credit hours) that I’m required to take to graduate this semester. I’ll walk at graduation and then come back in January to take an intersession class to take care of those last 4 credit hours.

Now that I’m only taking 2 classes this semester, my tuition has decreased by $10,000+. I’ve received enough loan and grant money, as well as donations from family and friends, to completely pay for this semester. SO THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

But I’m not totally free from this situation. I will not receive any financial assistance for the class I have to take in January with will be $6,000. I don’t know where I’ll get all that money but what this plan does is give me time to figure it out. This isn’t over but now I have room to breathe.

The dean of program, my boss, my professors, and my internship supervisor have all been guiding and advocating for me and I’m so thankful! And please know that I wouldn’t have been able to get this far without all your help. I will graduate. I will graduate!

It’s been almost a week since the last update.

Well, thank you again for the contributions you all have made and all of the sharing! I can say with all sincerity that we would not have gotten this far without the help of our collective - our community - our village. You all are AMAZING human beings who still believe in the power of US to achieve what may seem impossible.

Because of you and the encouragement we have received, we are going to keep pushing. We are currently making a payment arrangement with the University to break the payments down into smaller chunks so it doesn’t all have to be paid right this moment. So again, because of you we are ABLE to make our first down payment.

We still need to raise more, but this buys us some time and allows Kaila to start classes! This story will have a happy ending. Kaila is going to make it across the finish line on December 14, 2018!

Please continue to share her story and the link to donate. Thank you for being a part of making Kaila’s story end with the successful completion of her degree...we are forever grateful.

We will update again soon.

We are excited to send out this update - Kaila has met with the dean at the school and also with the Financial Aid department (again) and they were able to help get her more money (in loans, of course) that bring down the total out of pocket cost needed for this final semester. While we still need help, we are significantly closer to the goal!

I will post the updated total amount momentarily.

Thank you again to all who have donated and shared the link. We will not give up...this is way too important!
