Shipton family car accident

$14,987 of $30,000 goal

Raised by 145 people in 40 months
Last night on our way home from a fun day in Milwaukee for my son's birthday, a drunk driver crossed the center line on main street and slammed into our truck head on. Myself, my husband and our 3 boys are mostly ok, with minor injuries. However, my mother in law Laurel Shipton, broke her neck in the accident, causing her to be paralyzed from the waist down. She may never walk again, and has very limited use of her hands also. Multiple surgeries and intesive therapy, as well as medical supplies are all going to be her new reality. Insurance is limited and we will be having to miss a lot of work to take care of her as well as her inability to work and make her payments. This is going to be a long road, please help us if you can. Our entire world has been turned upside down. Thank you.

One Day at a Time has turned into One Step at a Time...!!
Oct 20, 2016 Laurel shares this wonderful news: "8 months ago my life made a drastic change with a spinal cord injury caused by a drunk driver. TODAY 8 months to the day and I've taken my first steps!! I am one happy person for sure. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers on my behalf!!"

Laurel's projected release date from Froedtert is April 15th, 2016. She is working hard towards that goal and plans to go to Andrea & Brian's house from there, with visits to Darryn & Carrie's house also. House renovations are underway and ramps and equipment etc are needed. We are also still unsure how many hospital bills will not be covered by insurance, as the girl who hit us did not have any, and our policies have limits. We appreciate every dollar donated and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the outpouring of love and support. This is a long road for all of us, please keep us all in your prayers.

3/8/16 - Darryn, Maustyn and I went to visit Laurel today. When we got there she was on her way to an outside "foray" for 10 minutes in the sunshine (65° today). She was able to steer her wheelchair from her room all the way down to the lobby and out the doors, then back to her room again. She also told us she was able to move her toes on her right foot this morning, and is still able to push her knees together a bit, though the majority of that motion seems to be coming from the right leg only. She also has a bit of spasming in her legs, mostly the right leg also. She gets a bit discouraged and frustrated with the things she can't do yet, and needs lots of encouragement. The doctors and therapists are hoping for her to go home in 4 weeks, but there will be goals she must meet for that to happen first, and a weekly meeting will take place to assess and adjust that time frame as necessary. She loves visitors and is getting stronger daily. She sends her love to each and every one of you for all the cards, notes, donations, and facebook messages. Thank you all.
Maustyn getting a hug and kiss from Grandma.

Every day is another step in improvements. Today the breathing tube was removed and she has been talking and laughing with friends and relatives. She tires very easily tho, and her pain meds knock her out too, but overall she is in good spirits. She sends her love and thanks to all of you and appreciates every message, gesture, etc.
I spoke briefly with one of her doctors who was present during surgery and he stated that the c6 vertebrae was "shifted" in the accident, causing the pinching of the spinal cord between the c6 and c7 vertebra. Her spinal cord was not severed, however it is hard to tell at this time what the extent of the damage will be. They are working with her consistently to keep her strength up, including sitting up and using her arms to hold herself upright. One moment, one hour, one day at a time. We love you, Mom.

From Andi: Mom has been home at my house for 2 weeks now. PT and OT are going really good. Today on 5/2/16 Donna from PT came, Aunt Janeen and myself stood mom up for the first time. Mom did awesome! Did it about 4 times. There were tears. She actually extended her body a little on her own. Have to go for now. Hopefully everyone can see this post. Thanks to all that have been following mom's progress!

Our dear Laurel.....our thoughts go your way countless times each day. We can only imagine what you've been through, and the struggles of each day as you are rehabilitating. The wonderful news is that you have made amazing progress already, certainly more than doctors would have predicted. We're thrilled to hear this, and want to encourage you to keep on fighting. You and I don't give up easily, my dear......and we won't now. I'm sorry I haven't been attentive about posting to your site. It's been a situation of dealing with "life turned upside down" here, too. We love you so much and keep you in our prayers, Laurel. Love, Vicki and Rod
