Shipton family car accident

Oct 20, 2016 Laurel shares this wonderful news: "8 months ago my life made a drastic change with a spinal cord injury caused by a drunk driver. TODAY 8 months to the day and I've taken my first steps!! I am one happy person for sure. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers on my behalf!!"
I spoke briefly with one of her doctors who was present during surgery and he stated that the c6 vertebrae was "shifted" in the accident, causing the pinching of the spinal cord between the c6 and c7 vertebra. Her spinal cord was not severed, however it is hard to tell at this time what the extent of the damage will be. They are working with her consistently to keep her strength up, including sitting up and using her arms to hold herself upright. One moment, one hour, one day at a time. We love you, Mom.
I know you're a dear friend to my sister Tricia, and give so much to the scouting community. Thank you for all you've given. You're in my prayers for a miraculous recovery, and I pray everything you have given is returned to you 1000 fold in your time of need.
I was also paralyzed in a car/train accident from a broken neck and broken back!! I also broke my pelvic, all my ribs, punctured one lung and collapsing the other lung. All while pregnant, and my son and daughter were killed in this accident. The good news was after 6 weeks I got my feeling back and am no longer paralyzed, and am able to live somewhat of a normal life!! God speed and praying your get your feelings back as well!!!
I don't know your guys financial situation but there are programs to pay you for taking care of her disability in the home. They will help with therapy costs, medications equipment and pay u to help her. I believe in fondulac it's call Lakeland care. Go to the aging and disability resource center they can help you.
From Andi: Mom has been home at my house for 2 weeks now. PT and OT are going really good. Today on 5/2/16 Donna from PT came, Aunt Janeen and myself stood mom up for the first time. Mom did awesome! Did it about 4 times. There were tears. She actually extended her body a little on her own. Have to go for now. Hopefully everyone can see this post. Thanks to all that have been following mom's progress!
Our dear Laurel.....our thoughts go your way countless times each day. We can only imagine what you've been through, and the struggles of each day as you are rehabilitating. The wonderful news is that you have made amazing progress already, certainly more than doctors would have predicted. We're thrilled to hear this, and want to encourage you to keep on fighting. You and I don't give up easily, my dear......and we won't now. I'm sorry I haven't been attentive about posting to your site. It's been a situation of dealing with "life turned upside down" here, too. We love you so much and keep you in our prayers, Laurel. Love, Vicki and Rod
We will keep praying until you are healed.. God Bless you and Know you are in so many hearts and prayers. ♥
