Justice for Joseph Hines & Family

Will you please join us in the fight to empower all Americans to stand up for justice?

Imagine coming from a two parent home where respect for elders and authority were embedded into your upbringing. You're the son of the pastor, looked up to not only by your peers but the entire community. Imagine being a star athlete in high school, winning the Heisman award, and being on the honor roll your entire school career.....And now you're off to college with a deep understanding that authority figures should always be respected and that they have your best interest in mind.

Now imagine you're sitting on a bench one evening with your college roommates when the police approach you. You're not alarmed by them, because after all, authority figures are for the good of the community, right?

That is until one of the police officers slaps handcuffs so tightly on your wrists that it leaves deep lacerations that causes excessive bleeding. You think, "this must be a mistake", but before you can ask for clarification, you are maced directly in the eyes. This causes you not to be able to breathe. You shout out over and over, " I can't breathe." The more you shout out, the harder the cops punch you. Imagine being beat so badly that you black out. When you finally come to, you are hogtied, your eye is swollen shut, you are face down on the concrete begging for water, begging for air, and it seems no one cares, especially the authority figures who are supposed to help you. Imagine realizing they are the one causing you all this pain.

Now imagine after being hospitalized for three days because of the police brutality, you realize you were right...it was a mistake. Imagine finding out that you were beaten so badly by police officers for....littering.

Imagine being told that you now suffered brain damage because the police officers thought perhaps you were a homeless person or maybe it was because they didn't like the color of your skin, but whatever the reason was, you know your life will never be the same. You now have to endure sleepless nights, flashbacks, and a career path different from what you worked so hard to achieve. Imagine having to live with PTSD and not knowing what your future holds mentally or emotionally. This is exactly what happened to Joseph Hines on August 29, 2012.

Joseph Hines, a 20 year old Ohio State University Student, was severely beaten and arrested by the Columbus Police Department..the charge: LITTERING.

After 3 years, Joseph and his family finally went to court where the court admitted that Joseph had been abused by the police using excessive force and that force had caused him brain damage.

After determining that the police beating resulted in Joe's brain damage, hospitalization, PTSD, and daily functioning, the court of 10 all white jurors then awarded Joseph....$30,000. At the end of the trial, Joe was beaten again with this mockery of justice.

Joseph's family, Pastor and First Lady James and Leontyne Hines, have already faced $26,000 in expenses for their son because of this brutal beating. In addition to this, there are future medical expenses, legal costs, travel expenses for the past three years, and lifetime suffering for this family.

There have been several killings and beatings of young black males throughout this country. Some of those who have killed these young men have been rewarded through financial gains via accounts like gofundme and others. That is a symbol that evil does exist and that people will fight for. Dr. Martin Luther King declared some 50 years ago that the only thing needed for evil to succeed, is for justice to keep silent! Let's not keep the justice silent.

Your donation not only supports Joe and his family, but is a symbol that when joined together, the believers in justice and equality can have a greater positive impact than an entire justice system. Your donation will be your voice that it's not ok to beat a man for littering. Your money will prove to these officers that it is not acceptable to put handcuffs on a person so tightly that it causes deep lacerations because he may be homeless. Your contribution will signify that you will not tolerate beating a college student unconscious brain damage for any reason. Your gift will be a symbol that you will not tolerate police brutality. Your financial sacrifice will help make a stand that when the justice system fails, the American people stand united.

By donating the money that you would normally spend on eating out this week, you can help in the pursuit of justice and to prove that American citizens believe that Martin Luther King Jr. had more than just a dream. Your money is a symbol that "human progress is neither automatic or inevitable. Every step towards the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern dedicated individuals." (MLK)Please don't let this family suffer alone. You are the concerned, dedicated individual who could make a difference in justice.
