I had been in Atlanta for work last week and was meeting friends in West Palm Beach for the weekend. Since Kamil had just moved to Miami, it was a perfect excuse to fly there on Thursday and spend some time with him.  Kamil moved to Miami from Dallas on January 8, 2018 to be the Operations Manager for Prada Bal Harbour.  Prior to this, he worked for Louis Vuitton for six years in Dallas which is where we became friends.  My name is Katy Park, and I work full time for Young Life in the Dallas area.

Kamil picked me up from the airport around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2018 and by midnight, he was gone.

He never met a stranger, went out of his way to help people, was an incredible, loyal friend, and loved his family more than anything or anyone.

He loved dive bars and I love karaoke, so around 10:30 p.m. we walked from his apartment, down Ocean Drive to Mac's Deuce Bar, a well-known local favorite. We had one drink, talked and laughed, and I asked how long he was going to live there before he started to wear sandals year-round. He told me he would let me know when we got to the next place. We finished our drinks, said goodbye to the doorman and started walking to the karaoke bar.

That’s when time stopped. A small African American male got out of the passenger side of a white car pointing a gun at us.  He fired two shots that hit Kamil in the left shoulder and abdomen, then got back in the car and disappeared. I am alive because Kamil protected me. He didn’t hesitate. His last words were “Katy, keep walking.”

Kamil's family and friends will celebrate his life on February 3, 2018, his 30th birthday in Buffalo, NY.  All donations will go directly to and be used by the Patel family to help offset the cost of funeral and memorial expenses as well as add to the reward offered by the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Kamil's killer and his accomplice are still at large. I want the people who did this to know that there is an army of people, an army of resourced family, friends and co-workers, who will not rest until we find justice for Kamil Patel.

If you have any information on this shooting, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can remain anonymous and you may be eligible for a monetary reward.

The Patel family and the Buffalo rugby community have set up a scholarship in Kamil’s name to honor his legacy: http://buffalorugby.org/scholarship.

It’s been one month since Kamil’s funeral, and every day I have been blown away by the kindness and generosity from all of you. Your texts, calls, comments and emails have been a light in the midst of the darkest days.

Both the shooter and the driver have been arrested and charged with first degree murder, and the timeline for a trial is unknown.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your support. I truly believe that justice for Kamil is in the future, and his legacy will live on through this scholarship, and through his community of family and friends for generations to come.

The post below is from Dannish Patel, Kamil’s brother:

I don't really post on social media much, but I just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone for their love, support, and incredibly generous donations through this tragedy of losing my brother so unexpectedly. A suspect was recently taken into custody and though we are happy that justice is being served, closure still feels like something that is far away for my family at this point… losing Kamil has left an indescribable void that will take a long time for us to come to terms with.
But through all the heartache, it has been really uplifting to see so much of Kamil's spirit in all of his friends. To see nearly 400 people and more attend his service, it truly shows what character he had and what an overall amazing person he was. I see what my brother saw in every one of you and honestly I would love to get to know everyone more. I want to hear about the Kamil everyone else knew, so if you have stories, memories, photos, or whatever it might be - please get in touch with me (dannishpatel@gmail.com) so we can all continue celebrating his life.
And if there is at least one silver lining I could take from all of this… it would be to say how you feel more. I encourage everyone to reach out to their loved ones and let them know you love them. It's a small thing to do, but it's so important, and it's something Kamil always did.
Thank you again to everyone who stayed by our side through these terrible circumstances. This has easily been the most difficult thing we've all faced, but all the heart-warming hugs, phone calls, emails, and text messages we've received from everyone has made it at least a little easier.
And just one more thing… With the help of The Buffalo Rugby Club, my family will be creating a scholarship in Kamil's name. This scholarship will assist young college-bound rugby players with some of the costs associated with going to school. Hopefully more updates to come on that soon!

Though it has been a quiet few days in the media, we have been in close contact with detectives of the Miami Beach Police Department. They are continuing to work around the clock and are uncovering new leads daily. We will send updates as we have them.

Thank you for your continued concern, prayer and support. We will not stop fighting for #justiceforkamilpatel!
