Junkyard Seed Money Campaign

$1,345 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 30 people in 24 months
This campaign is for seed money designed to be the first big fundraising effort to see the Memphis version of City Museum come to fruition.

The Junkyard (name subject to change) will be Memphis' first hands-on, knees-on, feet-on museum of art. Built from architectural salvage by professional artists, engineers and volunteers in the community, we will construct an organic work of art that will be a place for all ages.

You will NOT find pre-fabricated plastic playground equipment, these will be works of art designed for climbing! Teachers bring your students for team building, teenagers come get lost with your friends, parents drop off your kids for camp then come back and join them as the evening winds down, or take your family for a day of adventure that will ensure a different experience with each visit!

We have a strong and faithful board, we have amazing volunteers and we have a city that deserves this. Let's make it happen! Are you in?

How this works: The amount you contribute will be used in fundraising efforts to help secure larger donations that will be for: Capital campaign, building, operation costs, exhibit development and construction.

You may be wondering...

Q: How long will you be running the seed campaign?
A: Let's give it 6 months and see where we are at, shall we?

Q. What will happen to our donation during that time?
A. They will stay in the GoFundMe account. We are not going to withdraw them until we have raised our full amount and it looks as though we will get funding to move forward.

Q. What will happen to our donations if it looks like it isn't moving anywhere?
A. You will have your money refunded to you. GoFundMe assists us to make sure your money is returned to you should the project not move forward.

Hi everyone! It has been awhile and I apologize for that. There is a LOT going on with the Junkyard, but I hate that I have to be vague about it a little longer. Here are the things I CAN tell you....

How about a little more about me so you know there is a human behind this campaign? I am a PhD student in a program designed for museum professionals. In other words, my entire life right now is based on preparing to step into whatever role I need to in order to see this project come to fruition. And I work with a fantastic network of other museum and gallery professionals from all over the world that share their trials and tribulations.

I am also a mom, so aside from wanting to create something for the community that engages our youth, I want to provide a place for my children as well...who are almost both teenagers...yikes!

What about where we are at in the project? I am working with two enormously talented artists I will tell you more about this fall when we unveil our proposal (if they will allow me to brag on them). This is a collaboration, and we have some really amazing talent in our city.

What about location? You guys send me the best suggestions...from Broad Ave, the Coliseum, the Commercial Appeal Building and LOTS more!!! How to decide? Well...it comes down to money, and when you don't have enough to purchase a building you improvise. What I have been able to do with the money raised so far is:
-build community awareness
-show legitimacy in the project as well as demonstrate community interest
-update the business plan
-meet with local leaders to identify potential partners and locations

All that said, I am happy to announce that we have a location. It is NOT a brick and mortar facility. But it is a space that has been offered for us to create a proposal around, and we are working on this right now. We are also speaking to other organizations about partnerships.

As for specific location? It is a public space that will be open to all free of charge. It will be a place where we build our first climbable sculpture. Those of you that have donated WILL have your names included in the structure as donors. Because we have a few locations identified and will be working with other groups for final approval, I am not in a position to say specifically where it is. What I CAN say is that this is still a Midtown/Downtown project. There is also a pretty good chance we have a few of our sculptures being built in a few different outdoor locations.

All of that said, we still are building these from your donations. Working towards our goal of $50,000, we would be able to build 2-3 of these sculptures in public locations and work towards our larger goal of a building.

In addition to personal donations we will be looking for corporate sponsorships once we are able to illustrate the location and exhibit proposal. If you know a business that might be interested, let me know and I will make sure I pay them a visit this fall when we are ready to advance to the next phase!

Keep spreading the word and donate!

Fundraising update: What a gorgeous weekend we had! Great donations coming in, great weather...and if we keep combining the two we can be enjoying these beautiful weekends playing around on outdoor sculptures, listening to live music, and enjoying time with our friends and families!

In fact, it was a weekend just like this that inspired me to get moving on this project years ago. I was the mother of two kids under the age of 3 and step-parenting a teenager. My how time flies! Where do you take such a motley crew where everyone can enjoy themselves and you don't have to keep paying to be entertained?

We have artists working on exhibit renderings, working on public projects in order to be prepared to build these exhibits for our community, and a lot of great momentum going. Let's keep it up.

And be sure to follow up with our updates to see the progress we are making! It's a team effort. More info to come as we push forward!

Fundraising Update Time! We kicked off our seed funding campaign just this week, and we are chipping away at our goal a dollar at a time.

What is Seed money? It's the first leap of faith donation that means not only do you want to make this project happen, but you believe we can get it done. You also know that we can't do it alone, and need your help. If you know about Memphis history, you will know that Robert Church was one of our most important seed donors of all time, and the reason we have the amazing city we do today. Our city was built on ambitious gambles.

It takes a brave person to make this leap. And whether your donation is large or small, it takes us a step closer to our goal.

What you can do TODAY: Donate the amount you would have paid for your Starbucks. Share this campaign on your social media accounts. Tell your friends and send them the link. If you can give more, that's amazing. Know that the small donations are just as important.

What happens NEXT? All of you who have already donated, as well as those of you who jump on board with your donation, will be included in a permanent installation. We are working on the donor exhibit rendering and will post the rendering when we have it complete.

Thank you for your support and encouragement!!! Stay tuned!
