On April 23, the Bautista family received a call that no one expects and everyone dreads. Jovon, just 17 years old, had been shot. Despite the best efforts of emergency personnel, he did not survive the flight to the hospital in El Paso.
Jovon touched the lives of everyone he met in a positive way. He was easy going, quiet and a hard worker. He loved the outdoors - skateboarding, camping and hunting. He was respectful of others, especially his elders, and always looked for ways to be helpful.
As you can imagine, family and friends are devastated. Right now, they are focused on returning Jovon home to the reservation for burial. However, the expenses are piling up.
This fundraiser has been set up to raise the money needed to get Jovon from El Paso, Texas to the Pueblo of Laguna . The funeral home requires payment of $2,100.00 for preparation and transport before they will release his body. An additional $400.00 is needed for the family to travel.
Thanks to the generous donations of family, friends and strangers the Bautisa family was able to lay Jovon to rest. However, the need is still great. Please see update below!

UPDATE: Time goes by but the pain of Jovon's loss has not lessened. Not only must the family deal with his absence, they are also fighting for justice. Every day that goes by without answers compounds their pain. The financial challenges faced by his family continue to grow as the medical bills from that night come in. As of June 5, 2018 the outstanding total due for his medical expenses is $64,458.09.
As of June 12, the total due for medical expenses was $112,410.22, with donations directly to medical providers of $68,696.63. This leaves an outstanding balance of $43,713.59. A huge thank you to everyone who has given money, shared this page or said a prayer for the family. Your support gives so much strength and comfort!
