We are friends and supporters of Bryan Carmody, an independent journalist who has covered news in Northern California for nearly three decades. Over the last three decades, Bryan's content has been aired on every national news network, cable news outlet, and nearly every local T.V. station in America. On May 10, 2019, San Francisco police and the FBI broke down his front gate with a sledgehammer, and raided his home and newsroom office. Bryan was handcuffed the entire time - nearly 7 hours - while police executed their search warrant.

The purported purpose of the raid was to seek the identity of a source, or sources, that provided Bryan with information that was used in reporting by Bryan's clients. Bryan has refused to give up his source, and will continue to keep his source confidential. His reporting is protected by the First Amendment.

During the raid, the authorities confiscated every electronic device that Bryan owns; every computer, tablet and cell phone at his home and business, as well as business documents. By confiscating the equipment and documents, SFPD has hampered Bryan's ability to exercise his constitutionally protected right to report the news, and threatened his ability to earn a living.

We’re asking for $10,000 to replace equipment that was taken during the raid, help Bryan get his business up and running again, and prepare for his legal defense.

Bryan is grateful for everyone who has come out in support of his First Amendment rights.

What an amazing 48 hours.

The tremendous support from people all over the world, who have expressed their solidarity with Bryan, is a clear signal to the city leadership of San Francisco.

A few short hours after being released from handcuffs, at a time when only Bryan and a few close friends knew of the raid, a GoFundMe was discussed. Not knowing what his next days would be like, Bryan guessed he needed ten thousand dollars. Bryan's legal and professional situation remains unclear. What is clear is the support for Bryan from around the country, and around the world, is greater than we expected, or were able to envision at that time.

Bryan has estimated that replacement costs for equipment taken to be 30-40 thousand. Not to mention the man hours required to re-assemble a 30 year old independent news agency. In light of this, we have raised the goal of the GoFundMe to 100 thousand dollars.

To all the donors, Bryan is deeply humbled by, and grateful for your support. He is in contact with his legal counsel, and the New York Times is picking up the story today.

Wow...

Just got off the phone with Bryan, and we can't believe the support. We hope this story continues into the weekday news cycle, as we have seen that the story is being picked up in international media outlets.

We will continue to update you all as things progress.

Bryan is doing well. KNTV was at his house earlier for an interview, and he hopes to be back out covering news asap.

All the donations and shares have been INCREDIBLY humbling.
