Joshua Gates Fund

As many of you know, Joshua Gates is in the Cardio Vascular Intensive Care Unit right now. Here is a little background on how this strong husband and provider, father of 4, Boy Scout leader, fearsome racquetball player, and active member of his church has ended up with multiple hip replacements and scaring his wife of 17 years at the prospect of losing the love of her life before his time.

On September 26, 2016, Joshua had a hip replacement after having had the same surgery in October of 2015.  After almost 2 weeks with this most recent replacement, an operative tissue sample from his hip came back positive for an anaerobic bacteria; the possible cause of the first replacement failure. He went back to surgery again to pull the newest replacement and put in a temporary spacer. The plan was to treat the infection for 8 weeks before removing the spacer and doing the hip replacement for the third time in 14 months.

He was discharged home to a hospital bed in the basement counting on his wife’s skilled nursing abilities to continue to provide for his home care. On October 15th, Joshua was taken by ambulance to the ER and diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism, caused by Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).  After a short hospital stay to work on proper blood thinners, he was discharged home.  On October 27, the ambulance returned Joshua to the ER and he was diagnosed with Acute Renal Failure and Deep Vein Thrombosis with venous circulation from his right leg completely blocked due to the blood clot.   As a result of the level of clotting, he developed venous congestion in his lower extremities and pelvis.  He has now had TPA to break up the clots and may be moved to a step down unit soon. He is currently still recovering from kidney failure (they are now working!) and digestive issues. He is receiving TPN (IV Nutrition) until they can get his digestive system working again.

So many people have offered to help and provided the Gates family with prayers, meals and care for their children. For all of that, they are extremely grateful. Tracey has taken a leave from work to be with Joshua. Joshua’s leave, which was scheduled to be 8 weeks initially, is turning into a much longer leave of absence as they still need to replace the spacer with a permanent hip once he is healthy enough and the infection has been cleared from the hip. If you would like to help the Gates family, any donation would be appreciated. Prayers are awesome too.

Being from Raleigh, we (Monica & Maggie) are so thankful for the love and support we see in the Asheville Community! Despite these troubles that the Gates family have experienced, they are truly blessed to have a community of love and support that we have seen showered upon them. You guys are an amazing group of friends and we pray that God blesses each and every one of you.
