Support for Jose Hernandez

$20,815 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 563 people in 2 months
While heading home from work shortly after midnight on Sunday, November 26th, Jose Hernandez was struck by an SUV at the intersection of West Seventh Street and Grand Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota. An avid cycling enthusiast who was vigilant about safety, Jose always wore his helmet, used bicycle lights, and strictly obeyed traffic rules. He was moving with the right of way when the vehicle, running a red light, struck him.

Jose arrived at Regions Hospital unconscious. Over the past twenty-four hours, he’s undergone two surgeries to address the swelling in his brain. His injuries are massive: a crushed and severed spine, major brain damage, and many broken bones. He remains in seriously critical condition, and his prognosis has the odds stacked against him.

Jose has brought joy and humor to his friends and co-workers at Brasa Rotisserie. We, the Brasa team, are reaching out to the greater community for donations to help offset Jose's medical expenses, and, if necessary, to assist with funeral costs and the transportation of his body to Mexico.

Thank you for doing what you can to support Jose’s fund.

About the management of the fund:
I'm Ash Reynolds, Brasa's manager of Communications & Community Engagement, and the manager of this GoFundMe campaign to benefit the Hernandez family. I've been with Brasa for the past eight years and the company for many years longer. As you know, Jose worked with us at Brasa St. Paul for over a year and we exchanged many pleasantries throughout the year.

Thank you again to those who so generously donated. We currently do not have access to the funds, I am paying for the expenses out of pocket.  Once we do have access, I will begin withdrawing funds to cover the expenses involved with transporting Jose's brothers and eldest son to St. Paul, their room, board, and their return transportation.  I have also paid for Jose's burial in Mexico. The family has requested for Jose's fat bike to be returned to Mexico and it leaves on Monday.  The remainder of the fund will be sent to his family via wire transfer.

Good evening all.

The Twin Cities bicycle community has chosen to honor Jose this Sunday morning with a memorial ride from Brasa St. Paul to the site of the accident.

Riders will begin gathering at 10:30/10:45am and will leave the restaurant at 11:00am. They will travel down Grand to West 7th, the scene of the crime, and then turn around and head back up the hill to Cafe Latte for post-ride restrooms and warm up.

Questions? Please contact Theresa Nelson at 612-655-5662 or theresan@smart-trips.org.

Thank you again for the love you have shown Jose over the past few weeks, the love shared with Jose's family and the support you have shown each other.

- Ash

This memorial ride to honour Jose is hosted by Transit for Livable Communities, Women on Bikes Saint Paul, Cycles for Change, Saint Paul Bicycle Coalition, and Ghost Bikes Minnesota.

This morning we share with a heavy heart that our friend and co-worker Jose Hernandez has passed away. His family made the brave decision to add Jose to the organ donor list, and early this morning the process to save others began.

The generosity of this act truly reflects the spirit of a wonderful man. A person that always looked out for others and brought positivity, humor and care to all those around him.

It is the wish of the Hernandez family to transport Jose’s body to San Luis De La Paz, Guanajuato, Mexico, the town of his birth. Donations received will be used to help cover the cost of the transportation, funeral, and to support his family.

Once again, thank you. Your generous donations and many kind words are a reminder that the worst of times can bring out the very best in people.

Please include Jose in your thoughts and prayers.

With love and gratitude.

An update on our friend Jose.

Jose remains in critical condition at Regions Hospital surrounded by his family - two brothers who traveled to St. Paul from far away states, and his restaurant family. We are continuing in our attempt to bring Jose’s son to St. Paul.

Your generous donations are currently being used to cover travel, lodging and missed work costs for Jose’s family.

Again, from all of us at Brasa, and friends and coworkers of Christos Greek Restaurants, thank you for your kind words, generous donations and continued support.
