On December 15th 2017, Jonathan Higgins was critically injured in a horrific accident involving a motorcycle in Dubai. He was rushed to the nearest hospital and once stabilised he was transferred to the major Emergency and Trauma centre in Dubai, Rashid Hospital.
Jonathan's injuries were extensive and life-threatening, ultimately leading to the traumatic amputation of his left leg. After multiple surgeries Jonathan was finally woken from an induced coma on January 1st 2018. He remains hospitalised in Dubai but hopes to return home to Ireland for the next phase of his recovery, which will involve further rehabilitation and fitting of a prosthetic limb.
Jonathan has amazed everyone, including his doctors, nurses and physiotherapists, with his strength, determination and inspirational spirit in the face of this life altering disability. Despite severe nerve damage in his remaining leg, he has already progressed to hopping on crutches and has inspired other patients on the rehabilitation ward through participation in group therapy sessions.
Prior to the accident Jonathan was a fit, athletic young man proud to be from a farming background in county Sligo, with a huge interest in outdoor activities including rugby, cycling and hiking. We hope that an advanced microprocessor prosthetic leg will allow him to return to an active life and to continue pursuing his career.
We as his family have set up this campaign in an effort to offset the considerable cost of a prosthetic limb and any associated rehabilitation and physical therapy that may be required going forward. Any donation is so greatly appreciated and will help ease the financial burden during Jonathan's long and intensive recovery.
In addition we would urge anyone who can give blood to make a date to donate, as Jonathan received more than 150 units of blood products within the first 72 hours of his accident, and we are more keenly aware than ever that giving blood can save a life.
Since the accident the outpouring of prayers, love and concern from friends and family has been incredible and has been fundamental in helping Jonathan to remain positive and focused on his recovery. We are so grateful to each and every one of you for your support. Please continue to keep Jonathan in your thoughts and prayers.
