Sandi Hwang Adam  SAN DIEGO, CA
On February 20, 2017, a drive-by shooter fired several shots into the Pomona, CA home where a few families were gathered for dinner, killing 8-year-old Jonah Hwang.

His parents, my cousins Karen and Johnny Hwang, and his brother, Micah, were present and are heartbroken by this senseless tragedy.

From a public statement the family has released:

“The devastation that we feel from this loss is unfathomable.

We welcomed Jonah into our family less than three years ago, after adopting him from an orphanage in Taiwan. He had an infectious smile and loved everyone and everything: sports, wrestling with his dad, running, laughing, superheroes. With his playful demeanor, he adapted almost immediately to life in the United States and became a full-blooded American in no time at all.

Jonah was a light and joy in our household and we cannot imagine our family without him."

We've set up this fund to help support them as they grapple with the impact of this traumatic experience.

Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.

News coverage of the story here .

-------------------------UPDATE---------------------------
Johnny and Karen have asked me to communicate that they are overwhelmed by the love and support that people from all over have shown their family. The GoFundMe has well exceeded its initial goal, and with your kind donations they plan to create a scholarship fund in honor of Jonah to bless and give back to the children of Pomona. They write:

“We hope that Jonah can continue to be a beacon of light in this city, and that he won't be forgotten because of the love of so many people that have made his light shine as brightly as the person he was.”

This weekend, we said goodbye to Jonah with some of his favorite toys pinned to our lapels, and action figures in hand.

We celebrated a talented athlete and a lover of people, who lived life fully and fearlessly. We remembered how he was a swift runner -- but was more interested in looking back and beckoning those behind him to run alongside him than winning a race. We recalled how he reveled in being on an team, and in being part of a family and community. We retold the stories of how he challenged adults to hot pepper eating contests, and offered them piggy-back rides -- because that's what you do when you love people.

In so many ways, Jonah taught us how to live.

We know that our supporters on this page are from all over the world -- that is so remarkable. A huge thanks to Purpose Church in Pomona who put together a slide show of photos that played at the beginning of the service (( https://vimeo.com/206790154/164cec9444) and recorded the service for those who couldn't attend ( https://vimeo.com/206790053/c0b5fbe819).

We were left with a charge after the service: to be superheroes in our own right, and to live life fully, just the way that Jonah did.

Memorial services for Jonah will be held at Purpose Church in Pomona (601 N. Garey Ave., Pomona, CA 91767), on Saturday, March 4 at 1 PM. Jonah loved superheroes, and the family invites children who attend to bring a superhero action figure to celebrate Jonah by having superheroes in attendance at his service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to non-profit Pomona Hope http://www.pomonahope.org/donate/donate-online/ (please note “In Honor of Jonah Hwang”).

On behalf of the entire DE class of Mr. Hwang, our condolences are with the Hwang family. As a student of Mr. Hwang for 3 years along with most of us in his DE class, we have heard about Jonah being adopted. That was about all we knew about your son, but I thought of it being a very touching moment. Hearing this terrible news was just shocking to all of us. I would like to thank you for everything you have done for us Mr. Hwang for you have taught us so much over the past few years. My prayers are with you and your family. I wish the best for you and your family and we hope to see you back in the classroom soon.

Mr. Hwang, I'm so sorry for your loss. I was your student 10 years ago and learned not only a lot about science, but also about my responsibilities as a student and citizen. Jonah's legacy does not end with his life, and he lives on in loving memory. Praying for you and your family to find comfort and healing during this difficult time.

I can only imagine the pain that this has caused the Hwang family. Mr. Hwang was not only a teacher but a role model when I was his student almost 10 years ago. He inspired me to continue pursuing Biology, and now finally medicine. It is unfortunate to hear such tragic news happen to someone who's lessons continue to inspire me to this day, and the countless other students whom he's yet to inspire. I am praying for your family, and am gravely sorry for your loss.

Dear Mr. Hwang, I am so devastated by your loss and this senseless tragedy, it is hard to contain tears. As a student of yours, I was deeply impacted as you were my only Christian teacher at DBHS. You showed me grace so many times and I have to this day reflected on the deeper lessons I learned from you. You made it so clear to me that it was because of God's grace in your life and I could have not met a better teacher. I am so so sorry and weep with you. I am praying fervently for you and your family. With the deepest condolences and love, Chihye Chung

A young life taken from this world suddenly, unfairly, and too soon, I feel an overwhelming sense of grief, anger, desolation, rage, despair, and disbelief. But more than anything, I feel a sense of great loss. The loss of boundless possibilities and theft of childhood dreams. I did not know Jonah, but from this beautifully candid photo of him in a superhero costume, I see clearly a bright young life, an adorable boy filled with happiness, with laughter and a bit of mischief - and a lot of love. A smart little man with scruffy hair, a big toothy smile, who dreamed of flying and fighting super-villains. He dreamed of growing up and protecting his friends and neighbors. He dreamed fantastically big dreams: Of being cheered in class by his classmates. Of racing fast cars. Of all-you-can-eat candy stores. Of endless summers playing video games. Of slam-dunking basketballs with Stephen Curry. Of flying with Iron Man. Of shooting webs like Spider-Man. Of lightsabers duels with Darth Vader. Of staying up really, really late. And of throwing the biggest, most gigantic snowballs at his best friends! And no homework! But most of all, he dreamed of making his Mom and Dad happy and proud. Such was the brightness of this young life, that even in reflection does his energy and spirit readily shine through, illuminating the boundless possibilities and joy that lay before him. Reminding us of our own childhood dreams. The best of dreams. Dreams without limits. Dreams given form by the purity, imagination and innocent belief of a small child. Dreams so very real that they actually take shape and form on another plane of existence. For the moment, we must bid farewell in body, but not in spirit, and certainly not in memory. Somewhere, Everywhere, Jonah is enjoying his dreams. He is basking in the love of his parents, family, friends and many, many neighbors. He matters. He is fondly thought of. He is remembered. He is cherished. He is loved. He inspires. He awakes in us a spirit. He shines.

You are so kind and wonderful and I am so sorry this happened and there are no words to say. I'm glad I can contribute to your Go Fund Me and now this scholarship fund. I know that you need a lot of privacy during these times, but if there is anything more we can do to assist your family, I hope you won't hesitate to reach out to us.
