My name is Joseph Trongone. Many of you know me as Clarkstown High School North’s football coach. For four years it was my privilege to coach Willy McCue, CHSN class of 2016. Two weeks ago I learned that Willy had contracted flu and had been hospitalized. Due to secondary complications, Willy is critically ill in the intensive care unit at Montefiore Hospital. At nineteen,  Willy is fighting to overcome the devastating impacts flu can have on a person who has no underlying medical conditions. Willy played for CHSN with grit and an indomitable spirit that was unparalleled. Just as he showed his opponents on the field during his varsity days, Willy is unrelenting, determined to defeat the medical challenges that he is presently facing.

All successful teams realize that it is the contributions of each member that will result in a victory. Willy needs the support of a team to bring him home and return him to the robust health he possessed before the flu struck. Our community and his family are that team. His father Will, sister Erika, and immediate family are at the hospital around the clock to manage his medical care and provide him with love and support to sustain his spirit. They have been touched by the deluge of emails, texts, prayers, phone calls and food from friends and neighbors who are very concerned about his illness. Given the nature of Willy’s illness, he is being kept in isolation so he is not exposed to any other pathogens. Knowing they are not alone in this fight gives them strength to continue the vigil in the hospital and faith for a full recovery.

Will and Erika shall be by Willy’s bedside for an unknown period of time. When he does come home, Willy certainly will require ongoing medical care. Many people have asked how they can be supportive of Willy and his amazing family during this medical crisis. At this time, they are practically living at the hospital and they cannot take full advantage of meals and food donated or offered. Donating to Team McCue will ensure that the family can provide for any uncovered medical expenses, any unexpected costs that arise through travel and caregiving an hour from home, and the eventual homecare Willy will need while he is recovering. Every cent will go towards Willy’s journey to recovery. Together we can help Willy heal so he can return to college, return to volunteering with the New City Fire Department, and return to the healthy, vibrant young man he was just a few weeks ago. Regular updates will be provided through this site. Please donate to Team McCue today to show support for this incredible young man and his family.

We would also like to thank those we don't know who have contributed to the GoFundMe fundraiser. Your support for Will has touched us in so many ways that it continues to inspire and motivate us to reach our goals and dreams. Thank you!

During the last nine months, Will’s grandmother, Martha, has been a constant presence and provided invaluable emotional support. In order to prepare for Will’s return home, she added an accessible extension to her home. We love you, Martha, and are incredibly grateful for all of your help.

We also want to recognize all the amazing doctors, nurses, therapists, and support staff at Helen Hayes Hospital. You really are miracle workers. You have inspired Will and have given him the belief that he will lead an independent life. We are profoundly grateful for the hope and encouragement you have imparted, but most of all for helping Will regain mobility and independence.

Finally, as Will prepares to leave Helen Hayes Hospital and contemplates his hopes and challenges, we want to impress upon you that the journey we have experienced the last nine months would have been unimaginable without you staying the course with us. We look ahead optimistically knowing that we have a vast community of support that embraces us and will cheer Will on with every new step taken. We will never forget your kindness and compassion.

With heartfelt gratitude and love,
Will, Erika and Will

Update 3 - Part 1

It is hard to believe that Will has spent the last 5 months at Helen Hayes Hospital. During his time there he has spent much of it receiving occupational and physical therapy. He has gained an unbelievable 50 pounds and is strong and mobile. Will continues to move towards his goal of being fully independent with his prosthetics. Over the next year or so this is definitely attainable, but in the short-term, Will will be challenged with continued healing of his skin which will delay his progress until his skin is fully healed. His mental focus is truly remarkable. He is “strong willed” and committed to progressing and we have no doubt in his ability to become mobile and independent in the near future.

On October 13, 2018, Will confirmed what he's been telling all of us for a long time. For the first time, on both his leg prosthetics, Will was able to walk with a walker for 20 yards! Although he knew he could do it, he was so pumped about his progress. He knows his body! Even the physical and occupational therapists at Helen Hayes who have known all along he could achieve beyond what is expected were amazed. I and everyone are so proud of him! As many of you know, Will is an avid outdoorsman, at a young age an accomplished hunter and fisherman. Today, Will was able to handle, site, load and accurately aim and fire his crossbow at a target. He hit the target with ease, Will was so happy, confirming what he already knew he could do. Those of us who watched were all astounded at his “willpower” and determination!

During the next three to six months, Will shall focus on continued rehabilitation, prosthetic training, and engaging in what he loves to do: hunting, fishing, mechanics, being with his family and friends whom he loves, volunteering as a firefighter at the New City Fire Engine number 1 company, and re-engaging in studying criminal justice in college.

Dear friends,

Erika and I want to update you on Willy’s medical status. Once again, we have been incredibly touched by everything that you have done to support us and Willy. Your kindness and encouragement have truly carried us through the last four months. Willy continues to grow stronger with each passing day. As many of you are aware, the doctors determined they could not save Willy’s hands, left foot and right leg (just above the knee), so they have been amputated. As you can imagine, this life saving and life changing measure has been difficult for us to process. That said, Willy is physically and mentally tough, and he is eager to continue to live life to the fullest with prosthetic assistance. He is thinking about his next steps, and his courage and determination fuel our commitment to ensuring that he will be mobile and functional to the fullest extent. The funds that have been raised to date will help ensure that Willy receives all of the benefits rehabilitation can offer, including prosthetic devices.

We are delighted to report that on May 30th, Willy should be departing Montefiore Hospital and transitioning to a rehabilitation program at Helen Hayes Hospital. We are forever grateful for the phenomenal care Willy has received from the doctors, nurses, nursing assistants and support staff at Montefiore, and their remarkable role in Willy’s survival. A very special thank you to Jenna, Randi, Letty, Femi, Maureen T, Eileen K, Mary, Carla and Anthea! Your emotional support & kindness will never be forgotten.

For everyone who has helped us in some way, your prayers, hope, assistance and contributions are a profound testimony to the love and esteem you possess for us and Willy. Friends, relatives and strangers have shown us incredible support during this formidable journey. We are also incredibly grateful to Assistant Fire Chief Rich and all of the volunteers at New City Fire House. We want to thank you for your time, generosity, tireless efforts, compassion and commitment to Willy's full recovery.

We face the days ahead bravely and optimistically, knowing we are surrounded by those who truly care and are dedicated to helping Willy achieve optimal health and mobility.

With love,
The McCue Family
