In memory of John Nourse

This fund is set up for the family of John Nourse.

John was an active, vibrant man in the prime of his life: a respected police officer in Bellevue, WA; a valued member of every community that was lucky enough to have him; a trusted friend to so many of us; and, most importantly, a dedicated husband and father of three.

When I first met this family, I was immediately struck by how kind and thoughtful they all were. I admired Tawna’s fierce spirit and ability to advocate for her children. I appreciated Quincy’s easy laughter and tender, caring soul. I adored the girls’ sweet smiles and impeccable manners. And I was struck by John’s quiet but steady generosity. And they were all so close. This family was doing it right. They’re the kind of people you want to be around. They’re the kind of people most of us try hard to BE, but they seem to do it so naturally, so effortlessly.

Nine years ago John was diagnosed with a Grade 3 brain tumor (anaplastic astrocytoma). He had surgery and recovered completely. Last May, however, his doctors found a new Grade 4 brain tumor, a glioblastoma. This tumor was highly aggressive, and John and his family tried to make the most of the time they had left together.

Unfortunately, due to the very unexpected onset of John’s first diagnosis at such a young age, he wasn’t yet covered by life insurance. (Believe it not, they had the appointment with the insurance agent scheduled, but he got sick before they got there!) And from that point on--with a past history of brain cancer--it was impossible for him to get life insurance anywhere. John was a loving husband, a wonderful father, and a dependable provider. Now, however, the young family of four is pretty much on their own.

John’s wife, Tawna, was in college studying to be a counselor when they got the devastating news, but she was unable to continue with classes while coping single-handedly with the full-time job of caring for John as well as their three children. Their son, Quincy, is a smart, sensitive 8th grader starting to think about the challenges of high school and how to make the world a better place beyond that. And their 7-year-old twin daughters, Johnny and Charly, are making their way through elementary school together while figuring who they are as individuals.

I am quite sure that John’s dying wish was for his family to be okay: that the mortgage would keep getting paid, that they could keep buying healthy food to eat, and that all four of them would one day have a chance to earn a college degree. Whether you can chip in $5 or $5,000, your donation will help make John’s dearest wish come true. And your support will help his amazing family get through this otherwise unbearably difficult time.

Thank you!
Laurie (and John, Tawna, Quincy, Charly, and Johnny)
